ERIE -- Austintown's Derick Sallaz, a veteran of the KO Drugs High School Boxing Tournament, won a sub-novice three-round decision over Scott Lewandowski in quarterfinal action of the Pittsburgh Golden Gloves Sunday at the Avalon Hotel.
Sallaz, a 17-year old Fitch High senior, improved to 3-0.
Sallaz, with an ability to fight both southpaw and orthodox, hit Lewandowski with strong jabs from both sides and had the Pittsburgh fighter bloody by the second round.
"I used right and left jabs well and worked good to the body as basically I just outboxed this guy," said Sallaz, who fights out of the Buckeye Elks Youth Center in Youngstown and is trained by John Hobart. "I knew what I had to do and got the job done."
Hobart, a Canfield resident who has been training local fighters for more than three decades, said, "Derick looked good in working this kid over, but the best thing about this bout was that in the three rounds, Lewandowski only hit him four times."
Sallaz moves up to the semifinals April 5 at the Martial Arts Building in Bridgeville, a Pittsburgh suburb, with the sub-novice finals scheduled for April 8.
Fitch graduate and YSU student Chris Koval, another Buckeye Elks fighter trained by Tommy Cordell, has already earned his way to the novice heavyweight finals.
