YOUNGSTOWN -- Two girls face charges after confrontations in school Thursday.
A 12-year-old Jackson Elementary School pupil is charged with disorderly conduct. Authorities say the girl swore, spit, scratched, punched and kicked when a teacher tried to escort her out of a classroom, where she was being disciplined for refusing to sit in her seat.
The girl was suspended from school and taken home to her mother.
A 14-year-old was arrested in an assault on a teacher at Choffin Alternative School. She is accused of kicking a teacher in the groin, police reports show.
That struggle began when the girl, the teacher and a deputy sheriff argued over her going into a time-out room. The deputy took her to the juvenile center.
Taft in Austintown
AUSTINTOWN -- Gov. Bob Taft is to appear at a ceremony Saturday to recognize members of the Ohio Army National Guard's 838th Military Police Co. for their airport security.
The ceremony will be from 10 a.m. to noon in Austintown Middle School, 5800 Mahoning Ave.
The 838th has been performing airport security since October and has been reassigned to active duty.
Major Gen. Paul Sullivan, assistant adjutant general for air, is also to be at the ceremony.
Exotic-pet violation
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police found an 18-foot Burmese python and an 8-foot boa constrictor in a Tod Lane home Thursday morning.
The 48-year-old resident, who told officers he bought the snakes in Trumbull County, was cited in the violation of a city ordinance prohibiting the keeping of exotic pets.
Animal Charity theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- About $1,500 in cash, credit card receipts and checks was stolen from the Animal Charity organization at 3722 South Ave., city police reports show. A worker at the charity said the items were taken from a safe sometime between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 7:45 a.m. Wednesday. She reported the theft Thursday. There were no signs that someone had broken into or tampered with the safe, police said. The woman said there are four keys to the safe, three of which may be unaccounted for.
Booze and credit cards
CANFIELD -- Police seized 10 credit cards found in the car of a student at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on Wednesday morning.
The credit cards were discovered when police searched the vehicle around 10:50 a.m. after a teacher reported that an 18-year-old woman in her class had been drinking. A shot glass and an open bottle of vodka were also discovered.
The student told police she had been drinking with friends the night before and that the vodka must have been left over. She also told police that she didn't know the credit cards were in her car and that they belonged to a friend of a friend.
Cocaine conspiracy
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted three people on charges of conspiracy to distribute about a pound of cocaine between Jan. 9 and March 3. Charged are Darnen F. Watson, 37, and Andriell N. Lee, 24, both last known to live in the same Midlothian Boulevard apartment in Youngstown, and Keith K. Kameka, 35, of Pembrook Pines, Fla. Watson, an illegal immigrant from Jamaica, is a fugitive, and Kameka and Lee are in federal custody pending trial, the U.S. attorney said.
Suspect surrenders
YOUNGSTOWN -- One of four men accused in the killing of Stephen Shackleford, 29, of McBride Street has turned himself over to Youngstown police. Eddie Bryant, 24, is charged with murder. Police have arrest warrants out for three other men they believed were involved in the killing. Shackleford was shot Tuesday outside his home in the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority's Victory Annex complex.
Poisonous snake
BAZETTA -- No charges are being considered against a 16-year-old who told police he captured a poisonous snake in his grandmother's basement.
Officers discovered Thursday that the rattlesnake was actually bought over the Internet.
Police Chief Bob Jacola said the Ohio Wildlife Division is investigating whether the snake is on the endangered species list.
