AUSTINTOWN -- Police shot and killed a hybrid wolf in an open field near Sleep Inn, 5555 Interstate Blvd., Tuesday afternoon. Police had been called by an agent of the humane society who reported that the animal "was dangerous and presented a substantial risk to humans, especially in the business area in which it was located." The agent requested the animal be destroyed.
Facing Pa. rape charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Warren man was in Mahoning County Jail this morning awaiting pickup by Pennsylvania officials on charges that he raped a woman in Meadville, Pa. Michael J. Grantz, 25, of Draper Street, appeared before Judge Robert G. Lisotto of Common Pleas Court on Tuesday and waived extradition. He had been arrested by Mahoning County deputies Monday. Meadville police said Grantz raped a 19-year-old woman he knew Oct. 18.
Voyeurism casegoes to grand jury
AUSTINTOWN -- The case against a Lanterman Road man accused of videotaping a high school girl while she changed clothes has been sent to a Mahoning County grand jury. John Hoppa. Jr., 33, is charged with voyeurism and tampering with evidence. Police said he destroyed a videotape that was to be used as evidence. The case was sent to the grand jury from county court here. Hoppa worked as a part-time technician for Channel 19, the township's public access station, when he was arrested. He has since been fired by the school board.
Student workers
CANFIELD -- Construction contractors needing trained workers are invited to tour the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, during an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Contractors will be able to tour the vocational school's construction facilities and meet the top students as they build a home inside their work area. Information will be available about summer work agreements and training allowances.
Charged in threat
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 53-year-old East Side man accused of threatening a customer with a gun at a Market Street shop faces two felony weapons charges and a misdemeanor aggravated menacing charge. Bud Roland Jr. of Vaughn Avenue pleaded innocent to the misdemeanor during a Tuesday arraignment in Youngstown Municipal Court. He is accused of pointing a gun at the head of another customer waiting in line at Jordan's Market about 6 p.m. Sunday, and telling him, "I'm next." Judge Robert P. Milich ordered cash or surety bonds totaling $10,500 on the felonies and a 10 percent bond of $1,500 on the misdemeanor.
Teen-ager entersplea in stabbing case
AUSTINTOWN -- A North Navarre Avenue man has pleaded innocent in a stabbing Saturday. Todd Grate, 19, is charged with obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and assault. A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for April 8 in Mahoning County Court. Grate told police he hit Michael Grate Jr., 26, with a pool cue Saturday during a fight, but doctors said his injuries were caused by a knife or other sharp object. Police were not immediately sure if the men are related. Michael was in stable condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Facing 3 theft counts
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township police have charged a 39-year-old Northeast River Road man with three counts of theft in a home burglary. Police reports say the man was entrusted with keeping tabs on the home while the owner was away and instead stole more than $6,000 worth of guns, tools and antiques. Police say the man told them he stole the items to support his drug habit. He faces arraignment Thursday.
Coitsville meeting
COITSVILLE -- Township trustees will meet in a closed-door session at 9 a.m. Thursday to discuss personnel issues. They will meet at the office of Atty. Mark S. Finamore in Warren.
