YOUNGSTOWN -- A 22-year-old man who was chased and fired upon by two men at his East Side home told police the attack may be related to the murder of a man found burned to death in a car in Crandall Park last week. The man was going in the back door of his Lansdowne Avenue residence about 3:30 a.m. Monday when he heard someone approach from behind and saw two strangers. He ran as the men fired about six shots.
Man fights off intruder
CAMPBELL -- A 75-year-old Sanderson Avenue man told police he successfully fought off an intruder who attacked him as he slept on his couch, only to discover his 3-month-old Chihuahua was stolen. The man said he was jumped and punched by a man demanding money about 11:15 p.m. Monday. The man said he hit the attacker on the head with a TV tray.
Teen shot in leg
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old South Side man told police he was shot in the leg somewhere on Foster Street near the Westlake housing complex on the city's North Side. The man, of Homewood Avenue, said he heard two shots during the shooting at 11:45 p.m. Monday but refused to give police more information. He was interviewed by police as he was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. He was taken there by two teens.
Drug arrests
BOARDMAN -- An 18-year-old Youngstown man is charged with felony possession of heroin after police found two small packs of the substance in his wallet late Monday. The drugs were found during the booking process after the man had been arrested for prior warrants. In an unrelated matter, police also charged a 20-year-old Youngstown man with felony trafficking in drugs after he was found to be carrying marijuana Monday afternoon. A 30-year-old woman traveling with the man is charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and arrested for two prior warrants for felony receiving stolen property and probation violation.
Gun is fired at door
YOUNGSTOWN -- Vandals fired two rounds from a shotgun into the front door of a Sherwood Avenue residence around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Police said a resident of the house told police she believes the encounter is related to an ongoing problem she's been having with juveniles. A 1993 Ford Ranger parked in the woman's driveway was also damaged by shotgun blasts. Police recovered two spent 20-gauge shells from the sidewalk in front of the house.
Theft reports at school
CANFIELD -- Police are investigating a report that a Canfield High School student took a teacher's laptop computer and placed it in a locker Thursday without the teacher's permission. Police reports do not identify the student. The laptop was taken from the school's math meeting area around 2 p.m. The father of a Canfield High School student also called police Friday to report that his son's bag was stolen from a hall in the high school March 12. The bag contained jeans, a pair of sneakers and a jacket, worth a total of $150.
Town hall meeting set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 7th Ward annual town hall meeting, where city and ward residents can discuss issues facing the city and the upper South Side neighborhood with various city officials, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana building, 3660 Shirley Road. Councilman John Swierz, D-7th, will oversee the session.
Dem group to meet
POLAND -- Democrats of the 17th District, a Mahoning Valley political organization, will meet tonight at 7:30 in Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road.
SCOPE Center opens
LIBERTY -- The SCOPE Senior Center opened here Monday on Tibbetts-Wick Road behind White Wing Christian Book Store. It has limited hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those interested in joining the center and learning more about programs can call (330) 539-5629.
