NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township mine drainage concerns will be the topic of a special presentation during the trustees' monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Members of the Alliance for Watershed Action and Riparian Easements, which is part of the Mahoning County Soil and Water Conservation District, will update township residents on the activities aimed at solving a drainage problem.
The group has started an inventory of sites affected by mine drainage in the Yellow Creek and Mill Creek watersheds. Preliminary findings will be presented, and funding sources for corrective action will be discussed.
Topographic maps of the area will be available for residents to identify and comment on drainage seeps. The maps will remain in the township offices in the South Range Plaza until the end of the month, and residents are encouraged to view the maps during business hours.
Shenango road closing
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- The Sharon-Bedford Road in Shenango Township will be closed about one mile north of the Lawrence County line between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will be doing drainage maintenance on the road that day, weather permitting.
Firearms violation
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Union Township man is accused of giving false information in an attempt to buy a firearm.
Pennsylvania State Police arrested Christopher Michael DeJohn, 21, of Scotland Lane on Friday on charges of illegal sale or transfer of firearms and unsworn falsification to authorities.
State police said the charges stem from Sept. 28, when he attempted to buy a firearm at Duke's Sporting Goods in New Castle. DeJohn was arraigned before District Justice Melissa Amodie and released without monetary bond.
Man is stabbed in fight
SHARON, Pa. -- A New Wilmington man was treated at Sharon Regional Hospital after being stabbed in a fight this morning.
Ryan Ursta, 22, of Clay Furnace Road, Sharpsville, faces charges of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct in the fight, which happened in the parking lot of Connelly Boulevard and Railroad Street at 1:30 a.m. today.
Police said Ursta and Chris Roscoe, 23, of New Wilmington were fighting when Ursta pulled out a 2-inch pocket knife. Roscoe suffered cuts to his neck and abdomen, they said. Police said they did not know what prompted the fight. Ursta was arraigned this morning before District Justice James McMahon.
Burdman Group threat
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating an apparent threat to two employees at the Burdman Group, 274 Broadway, Sunday evening.
A man entered an unlocked door around 6:30 p.m. and said that he was unarmed. He opened his jacket to show a living skills assistant and a direct service aide working at the facility that he was not carrying a weapon, police report.
The man then asked to speak with a supervisor. The workers informed him that he would have to return Monday to speak with one.
He said he may return today or Tuesday and, referring to the murder of a Burdman Group employee two weeks ago as she drove two clients to work, told the women that the same thing could happen to them.
Robbery at McDonald's
YOUNGSTOWN -- Robbers emptied a safe at McDonald's Restaurant, 2525 Market St., and slightly injured an employee before the restaurant opened Sunday morning.
The assistant manager of the restaurant told police that she was pushed into the building as she was unlocking the door around 6 a.m. She was then forced to disarm the alarm and unlock the store safe.
After removing some of the cash from the safe, one of the robbers struck the woman on the side of the head and ordered her to remove all of the cash. She was then forced to lie on the floor. She called police after they left.
Theft at Salem YWCA
SALEM -- Police said a stereo and five speakers are missing from the aerobics room of the YWCA, 364 N. Lincoln Ave. An employee reported the items missing Saturday and stated that numerous people have access to the building.
