Women's golf
TAMPA, Fla. -- Youngstown State placed 12th of 22 teams at the Snowbird Intercollegiate tournament at Pebblecreek Country Club.
The Penguins finished with a 36-hole team score of 658. Arkansas State won the event with 617.
Jennifer Grossi led YSU by tying for 22nd place with a 158 (80-78). Other Penguin golfers included Stephanie Matasek (163), Gina Abruzzino (169), Lori Hatcher (170) and Nichole Hamstreet (171).
Arkansas State's Shellie Wenzel won the event with 139.
Softball
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Youngstown State won its last three games at the Rebel Games to improve its record to 5-7.
The Penguins defeated IPFW 3-1, Colgate 5-4 and Dartmouth 7-6. They will face Rider on Friday in the George Mason Patriot Classic.
Swimming/diving
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Youngstown State senior diver Brandi Goettsch finished 20th in the 1-meter diving competition at the NCAA Region C Diving Zones at Purdue University.
Goettsch scored a 228.45. Purdue's Kara Hajek-Gustafson won the competition with a 291.65.
Also for the Penguins, junior Amanda Smail finished 32nd (201.75), while freshman Kalyn LeVeto was 33rd (199.75).

Shain Hostetter innational tourney
NEW CONCORD -- Muskingum College freshman Shain Hostetter, a Salem native, finished 0-2 at the NCAA Division III Championships recently and ended the season with a 23-10 record.
The Ohio Athletic Conference champion at 125 pounds, Hostetter lost matches to Ithaca's Carlos Restrepo (17-9) and Kings' Mitch Marcks (7-4).
Muskingum finished the season ranked 29th in Div. III.

BOARDMAN -- Boxer Kelly Pavlik and his trainer, Jack Loew, will be the special guests of the Curbstone Coaches at their weekly noon luncheon Monday at the Lockwood House.

Ohio State hiresspecial teams coach
COLUMBUS -- Ohio State announced Saturday that it has hired Luke Fickell, a former player for the Buckeyes, as special teams coordinator.
He also will assist Jim Heacock with the defensive line.
Fickell spent the past two seasons as defensive line coach at Akron. He played for the Buckeyes from 1993 to 1996 at nose tackle and his 51 starts is a school record.

Densham winsin Gatornationals
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Gary Densham beat boss John Force to earn the top qualifying spot Saturday for the Mac Tools Gatornationals.
Densham, part of Force's three-car NHRA team, covered a quarter-mile in 4.885 seconds at 320.36 mph to lead the 16-car Funny Car field for the finals today.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Lleyton Hewitt, adjusting to the wind and blowing sand better than Pete Sampras was able to do, beat Sampras 6-2, 6-4 Saturday in the semifinals of the Pacific Life Open.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- Heavily favored Harlan's Holiday finally caught archrival Booklet to win the $1 million Florida Derby.
Harlan's Holiday, who lost to Booklet by less than a length twice this year, passed his nemesis on the far turn Saturday and won by 3 1/2 lengths over Blue Burner.
Booklet couldn't sustain a record early pace and faded to fourth, 15 lengths behind the winner. He lost for only the second time in eight starts.

* ORLANDO, Fla. -- Tiger Woods was everywhere he didn't want to be Saturday in the Bay Hill Invitational, making four bogeys in a round of 74 that brought just about everybody into contention.
On a hot afternoon that felt like summer, Woods squandered his four-stroke advantage by the time he made the turn, then hung on down the stretch for a one-stroke lead over Len Mattiace.
* PHOENIX -- Annika Sorenstam zeroed in on her third win in as many tournaments, shooting a 4-under 68 to take a four-stroke lead into the final round of the Ping Banner Health.
Cristie Kerr (70) and Australia's Rachel Teske (71) were tied for second at 210. Kerr had two eagles in the round.
