Baseball teamdowns Marshall
HUNTINGTON. W. Va. -- The Youngstown State baseball team jumped out to an early lead Tuesday and then hung on for a 10-7 win over Marshall University.
YSU won its first game in five tries while Marshall (7-7) saw its five-game winstreak snapped.
The Penguins grabbed a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Jim Lipinski hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Ty Furino added a three-run home run.
YSU scored four times in the eighth for a 10-5 lead. Jonathan Smart got the win.
Softball teamsplits in Fla.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Youngstown State softball team split two games for the second consecutive day in the Rebel Games Tuesday.
YSU beat Austin Peay 2-0 then fell to Colorado State 8-2.
A sacrifice fly by Amanda Berry and an RBI-single by Lacey Reichert gave YSU (2-4) the win against the Governors who were held to three hits.
The Rams seized a 5-0 lead in the first inning.
Rubesich receivesscholarship
HOWLAND -- Howland High School student Nikolas R. Rubesich received the $1,000 AMI Howland Wrestling scholarship.
Rubesich, a senior, received three letters and was the team captain.
Trumbull coachesset banquet
NILES -- The Trumbull County Coaches Association will hold its annual Basketball Player of the year banquet Monday at Mollica's Banquet Center at 7 p.m.
This year's banquet will be held in memory of Frank Bubba, the late coach of Warren Harding who passed away earlier this season.

Blewitt winsnational gold
BOSTON -- Boardman High graduate Adriane Blewitt, a junior from Ashland University, threw the shot put 51 feet, 3 1/2 inches to take the gold at the 2002 National Indoor Track and Field Championships.
In the 20-pound weight throw, Blewitt placed second behind teammate Jackie Jeschelnig with a throw of 61-4.
The two Ashland juniors were the only AU women competing and amassed 30 points to finish fifth nationally in the team standings.
This was Blewitt's second national title. Last spring, she led the nation in the discus. She's been national runner-up in the shot three times. Blewitt is a six-time All-America.
SOI wins
STRUTHERS -- The SOI under-12 soccer club won its age division for the second consecutive session in the Valley Sports indoor league.
Jason Domenick of Austintown is the coach.
Andy Chicase,Jack Kechler win
YOUNGSTOWN -- Andy Chicase and Jack Kechler rolled 2,813 to win the Youngstown Senior Doubles Tournament for 2002.
Bowlers split six games between Holiday Bowl and A-Plus Family Bowl.
The runner-up team was Jim Ellis-Joe Wilkos with 2,798, followed by G. Knapic-R. Belcik (2770), G. Protain-B.Streb (2751), J. Shaffer-J. Shaffer (2720), D. Siegel-J. Shopinsky (2711), R. Heuberger-R. Heaven (2704) and A. DePaul-D. Miller (2695).
Thirty-nine teams were entered. Chicase and Kechler will receive first-place money and plaques and will be recognized at the Youngstown Bowling Association Hall of Fame banquet in June.
Browns signSteelers' Ross
BEREA -- The Browns added another free-agent offensive lineman Tuesday, but they have to wait seven days before knowing if he'll actually join the team.
As expected, Steelers offensive lineman Oliver Ross signed an offer sheet to join the Browns, his agent said Tuesday.
Since the 6-5, 314-pound Ross is a restricted free agent, the Steelers have seven days to decide if they will match, and probably will use most of the time.

OCALA, Fla. -- Darryl Strawberry was jailed on his 40th birthday, for breaking a rule at the drug treatment center where he had been serving two years of house arrest.
Florida Department of Corrections officials did not provide details of the violation.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders promoted offensive coordinator Bill Callahan to head coach, three weeks after Jon Gruden left to coach Tampa Bay.
There was little suspense in the Raiders' decision. Though the team said it conducted an extensive search for its new coach.
Tyson getslicense in D.C.
WASHINGTON -- Mike Tyson got unanimous support from the D.C. Boxing and Wrestling Commission -- and his fans.
After a 2-hour meeting that at times resembled a pep rally, the commission voted 3-0 to grant the controversial heavyweight a license to box in Washington.
