CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Youngstown State pounded out 15 hits, but it still wasn't enough to produce the team's first victory of the season as it dropped a 19-6 contest to the College of Charleston Sunday.
The Cougars, who swept the three-game series, jumped on YSU starter Todd Tscherne for six runs in the first inning and led 14-0 after three.
The Penguins (0-3) had an RBI single by Tim Stacey in the fourth and another by Clint Ford in the fifth. YSU added two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
Stacey and Lipinski each had three hits in the loss. YSU begins a two-game series at Marshall today at 3 p.m.
Softball
DELAND, Fla. -- Youngstown State opened its season Sunday dropping a doubleheader to Stetson University 8-0 and 9-1.
In the first game, YSU starter Be Cicero was caught for eight runs in the first two innings when she allowed eight of the nine hits by the winners.
The Penguins could manage just three hits off Stetson starter Jennifer Buckley, who struck out five in five innings.
In the second game Stephanie Hartman held Stetson down through three innings with the Penguins trailing just 3-1, but Stetson rallied for two runs in each of the next three innings.
Again YSU could manage just three hits off Stetson pitching. YSU's lone run was scored by Char Kudlock in the third inning.

Miller withhockey team
PITTSBURGH -- Boardman's Tyler Miller, a junior at the Educational Resource Center, is a defenseman with the Beaver Badgers Midget Tier Two Hockey Team that won the Pennsylvania state championship in a weekend tournament at Airport Ice Arena.
Bob Hawthorne, manager of the Boardman Ice Zone, coaches the Badgers, who advanced to a round-robin tournament in Indianapolis. The Badgers will play Kentucky and West Virginia.
The regional winner will advance to the national championship round in California.
Last year, the Badgers finished third in the nation.
Duracky signswith Akron
AKRON -- Katie Duracky, a senior standout and captain of the Cardinal Mooney High girls soccer team last season, has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Akron next year.
Duracky, who scored 139 career goals at Mooney, was second-team all-state and District Player of the Year.
Duracky also plays for the Internationals club soccer team.
Trumbull teamwins in volleyball
LORDSTOWN -- The Trumbull Blue 14 went 3-0 in pool play, then defeated Wayne Juniors and Trumbull White Saturday to win the Lordstown Junior volleyball tournament.
Members of the team were Torie Thiron, Janine Bellino and Kristen Angelo of Hubbard; Bethany Fristik and Michele Parks of Crestview, Caitlin O'Patchen, Carly Bowlen and Megan Williams of Austintown and Brandi Snavely of Canfield.

SINDELFINGEN, Germany -- U.S. pole vaulter Jeff Hartwig cleared 19 feet, 9 inches, a height reached indoors by only two others.
Sergei Bubka of Ukraine holds the world record at 20-2, with other vaults between 19-9 and 20-2. Radion Gataullin also leaped 19-9.

* DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Ernie Els shot a final-round 3-under 69 and won the Dubai Desert Classic by four shots for his second tournament title in two weeks.
Els finished at 16-under on the Emirates Golf Club course and beat Sweden's Niclas Fasth, who had a 2-under 70.
* ADELAIDE, Australia -- Gavin Coles of Australia shot a par-72 to win the $500,000 Jacob's Creek Open, finishing two strokes ahead of American Bryce Molder.
