COLUMBIANA CORNER Not in shouting range

Before the start of Leetonia Village Council last week, volunteer firefighters, including Councilman Bill Garlough, were called away to extinguish a grass fire.
Soon after the council meeting began, a zoning question arose, and Councilman Dan Valentine called for Scott Garlough, the village building and zoning officer, who is also a volunteer firefighter.
During council meetings, Scott Garlough often works at his desk in a room adjoining council chambers.
"Hey Scott," Valentine shouted toward the open office door. The councilman's primitive intercom system generated a collective chuckle.
"He probably went to the fire," Mayor Artie Altomare said.
"So do you want me to shout louder?" Valentine cracked.
Address to board: The Columbiana County election board recently held a hearing to weigh a protest lodged over a discrepancy in the home address Charles Brown, a candidate for the 6th U.S. Congressional District, gave on his candidacy petition.
In addressing the board, Brown said he may have made an error in filling out the document, but he assured the panel the Yorkville address he gave is correct.
By way of proof, he showed the board copies of bills addressed to his house.
"The bills are paid too, by the way," Brown quipped as board members examined the documents.
The protest against his candidacy petition was denied.
Cover shot: The Columbiana County Park District's Greenway Trail is featured on the newest Ameritech phone directory for Salem-Lisbon and Columbiana.
The new book's cover depicts a tree-lined stretch of the hike-bike trail at its scenic best in fall foliage.
The nearly 12-mile pathway stretches from Lisbon to Leetonia, following a former railroad route.
