Nun has 100th birthday
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- Sister Mary Rose Scheetz, a sister of the Humility of Mary at the Villa Maria Community Center, celebrated her 100th birthday Friday. She was born in Canton, the oldest child of Thomas and Rose Gladieux Scheetz. She was baptized Mary Josephine at St. John the Baptist at in Canton. She entered the order Aug. 14, 1919, began her novitiate and received her religious name, Sister Mary Rose, on Dec. 25, 1919, and professed her first vows Dec. 26, 1921. She made her final vows Feb. 11, 1925.
She's a graduate of St. John College in Cleveland and completed training at the Cleveland College of Massage in 1930. She taught at schools throughout the area and helped create the physical therapy department at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in the 1930s. She retired in 1987 but still serves in the prayer ministry.
Good Friday breakfast
YOUNGSTOWN -- The YMCA will have its annual Good Friday breakfast and service from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. March 29. M. Bruce Beard, who has led the YMCA's men's fellowship Bible study Thursday mornings for three years, will be the speaker. Music will be provided by Tabernacle Presbyterian Church's praise team. BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Seventh-day Adventist Church will have a program on the economic and health dangers of meat during the annual Great American Meatout on March 17. Finger foods of nonanimal origin will be available at 4 p.m. Pastor Larry Belknap will discuss "God's Health Plan for Us" at 5:30 p.m., followed by a question and answer period.
