NILES City board awards contracts to companies for road work

NILES -- The city's board of control awarded contracts for two road projects.
At a meeting Wednesday, the board awarded the engineering contract for the Heaton-North Road improvement project for $76,855 to Thomas Fok and Associates of Austintown. The project, the second phase in the effort to improve the road, covers the area from DeForest Road to U.S. Route 422.
Last year, the city improved the road from North Main Street to DeForest. The project involved milling away deteriorating asphalt and placing new layers on the road. It also included installing curbs and a storm sewer pipe in open ditches.
Board members, including Mayor Ralph Infante Jr. and Safety-Service Director Donald Allen, also awarded a contract for reconstruction of Robbins Avenue to Marucci and Gaffney of Youngstown. The city's portion of the $1,532,058 project is $332,058.
The Robbins Avenue project targets the area between state Route 46 and the city limits and includes widening, curb and sidewalk installation, some storm sewer work, converting the middle lane into a turning lane and leveling the road to eliminate the crowning in the center.
