YOUNGSTOWN -- A South Side man accused of attempting to kill a 30-year-old Struthers man in December is in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail after his arraignment in Youngstown Municipal Court.
Wayne L. Martin appeared Monday before Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly, who set the cash or surety bond and scheduled a March 29 preliminary hearing.
Martin, 20, of East Lucius Avenue, is accused of shooting Sam Vona III in the face during a shooting Dec. 19 on an East Side street.
Vona's vehicle was found on Beachwood Drive near Jacobs Road around 6:30 p.m. Vona, who survived, had collapsed on the road.
Boy, 10, arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 10-year-old boy who broke out a window on a Community Bus Services bus was arrested on charges of vandalism, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest after he fought with a city officer trying to arrest him.
The West Elementary School pupil attempted to leave the busing company's Gibson Street office several times as the officer attempted to question him about 5:30 p.m. Monday, police reports show. She attempted to handcuff him, and he began to push and kick her.
After warning him, she sprayed him with pepper spray, took him to the floor and handcuffed him. The youth continued to kick and spit as he was placed in a patrol car. A family member said the teen is on medication. He was taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center for observation and treatment of a wound that was self- inflicted earlier in the day.
Drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 42-year-old South Side woman faces charges of aggravated trafficking-cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and drug abuse-marijuana after police found in her Miller Avenue home a bag containing 24 smaller bags of suspected crack cocaine, a small plastic bag containing suspected marijuana and various drug paraphernalia, police say.
Police had been called to the house about 9:30 p.m. Monday by the woman's husband, who had kicked in the door and let officers inside, complaining that his wife was using crack cocaine with strangers.
Violent argument
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 18-year-old man said his West Side girlfriend had thrown a glass at him and come at him with a butcher knife as he moved his things from her Oregon Avenue apartment, police report.
The man said an argument began about 12:30 p.m. Monday. He suffered scratches on his elbow from the glass but was not cut by the knife. The woman had cut two tires on his Ford Explorer. Three children were at the apartment at the time, police reports show.
2 face drug charges
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested two Deer Creek Apartments residents Monday evening when police found a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana in their apartment.
The men, 19 and 20, are charged by police with drug abuse-marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Firefighter injured
YOUNGSTOWN -- A city firefighter injured his back when he slipped and fell on ice that had formed on a driveway as a fire crew fought a blaze at a two-story home on the city's South Side. The fire at 2 a.m. today at 153 E. Avondale Ave. was started by a pot on the stove and caused about $20,000 damage, said Battalion Chief James Flynn. There were no other injuries. The firefighter was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Woman flees gunman
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 25-year-old West Side woman reported to city police that as she was parking her car at her Tyrell Avenue address with two other women and one of the women's year-old baby inside, her ex-boyfriend kicked the car and pulled a handgun.
The ex-boyfriend had parked his car to partially block the woman's car about 10:35 p.m. Monday, police reports show. When she saw the gun, she backed into his car and fled.
