Girard fire chief begins
GIRARD -- Fire Chief Kenneth Bornemiss began his duties Monday.
Bornemiss, a veteran firefighter, replaces Daniel Merwin, who retired. He will be paid $48,250 annually.
Bornemiss' name was certified to Mayor James J. Melfi by the city civil service commission because he received the highest score on the civil service competitive test.
Bornemiss, 39, is a Girard High School graduate and has a degree in finance from Youngstown State University.
He has been on the department for 11 years.
He and his wife have two sons.
Attempted jump
HUBBARD -- A Hubbard man is being evaluated at a local hospital after he tried to jump off an overpass early today.
Detective Mike Begeot of the Hubbard Township Police Department said patrol officers stopped the 19-year-old about 2 a.m. on the state Route 304 overpass at Interstate 80 because the car was being driven erratically.
Begeot said the man was prevented from jumping by officers Craig Callow, Chris Jacobs and Rick Wells.
He has not been charged.
Store rammed
NILES -- A caller reported that a vehicle rammed into the front of a Youngstown-Warren Road store this morning. Someone called police about 5 a.m., reporting that the two or three occupants of the car were taking items from the Big and Tall Casual Male Store after slamming their car into the storefront. The car left the store lot, heading west on Youngstown-Warren Road.
Guilty plea in Warren
WARREN -- An 18-year-old Hubbard man has pleaded guilty to charges of felonious assault, aggravated robbery and auto theft.
Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court will sentence Ken Hyatt after a background check.
Assistant prosecutor Chuck Morrow said Hyatt could receive up to 19 1/2 years in prison.
Hyatt was accused of assaulting George Kroynovich, 63, a clerk at Truck World Motor Inn in Hubbard Township, on Aug. 18 and stealing his 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88. Kroynovich spent several days in the hospital.
Arraignment in rape
GIRARD -- A 24-year-old man was to be arraigned in municipal court today on charges of rape, kidnapping and aggravated burglary.
Christopher Fenton of Crestview Avenue, Warren, was in Trumbull County Jail after his arrest overnight in Warren, police said.
Fenton is accused of breaking into his former girlfriend's home Friday, holding a knife to her and sexually assaulting her numerous times. Her children were in the house.
The woman said Fenton cut his wrist before fleeing.
Bazetta purchases
BAZETTA -- Township trustees bought about 75 tons of gravel Monday for the road department from Arrowhead Transportation of Cortland and a cell phone for the park worker to access his supervisor and 911 for emergencies.
They also donated $300 to the Easter egg hunt in Bazetta Park on March 22 and announced they will advertise for bids for resurfacing Lynn, Janet and Andrews drives.
They approved payment of $406 to Penn Care for supplies for the emergency medical services and issued a reminder about a scrap-tire collection by the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

Swimming lessons at Y
NILES -- Eastwood YMCA is offing swimming lessons to home-schooled children ages 3 to 16 from March 21 through May 23.
