WASHINGTON -- Local fire departments have until April 1 to apply for federal funding for fire operations and firefighter safety, fire prevention, emergency medical services and firefighting vehicles. The funding comes from the Assistance to the Firefighters Grant Program. U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, D-Ohio, who sponsored the bill that created the program, said applications may be obtained by calling toll-free (866) 274-0960 or from the U.S. Fire Administration Web site at www.usfa.fema.gov/grants. The grants require varying amounts of state and local matching funds.
