Goettsch nameddiver of the year
CHICAGO -- Senior Brandi Goettsch earned the Horizon League Diver of the Year award, but Youngstown State finished seventh in the swimming and diving championships over the weekend.
Goettsch won the 3-meter dive with 458.05 points and was second in the 1-meter (271.10) during the four-day event. The Penguins went 7-4 this season.
Michaelis, Smithrecord best times
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- In their last meet this season, sophomore Kurt Michaelis and freshman Nick Smith recorded career-best times at the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational.
Michaelis ran the mile in 4 minutes, 3.95 seconds to place third of 33 competitors. He will wait to see whether he will advance to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark.
Smith finished 15th in the 3000 meters (8:30.8), improving his personal best time by 28 seconds.
Tennis teambeats Niagara
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State women's tennis team evened its spring record at 2-2 after defeating Niagara on Sunday at the Boardman Tennis Club.
Double winners included Sarah Rothenberg, Jenny Vodhanel and Jenn Meister. Other Penguin winners were Leslie Banks, Julie Playforth and Annie Marino.
The Penguins lost to Dayton on Saturday. Their next match is Friday at 3 p.m. in Boardman against Wright State.

Ursuline tickets
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tickets for Ursuline's regional semifinal girls basketball game will be on sale in the high school athletic office from noon to 3 p.m. today through Wednesday. All tickets cost $5.
The Irish face South Euclid Regina at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at Cuyahoga Falls High.

Bethany teams lose
Otterbein defeated Bethany 121-98 Saturday night to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men's Division III basketball tournament.
Jeff Gibbs poured in 33 points and 13 rebounds to pace Otterbein (26-3) and became the school's career rebounding leader with 1,426.
Girard High graduate Keith Schubert scored 41 points for Bethany. Todd McGuinness added 19 points, and Struthers High graduate Mike Majzun scored 10 points for Bethany (21-8).
Bethany's women's team lost to Wilmington 82-66 in the Div. III tournament.
Megan Woodruff led Wilmington (27-1) with 17 points.
Nicole Naccarato led Bethany (22-7) with 16 points, while Mooney High graduate Katie Hardie had 11.
B-W's Miller wins55-meter hurdles
BEREA -- Fitch High graduate Justin Miller, a sophomore at Baldwin-Wallace College, won the 55-meter hurdles title and improved his provisional NCAA Division III national meet qualifying time last weekend at the Ohio Athletic Conference meet.
Miller won in 7.68 seconds and was to learn today if that time was good enough to qualify him for Saturday's national meet at Ohio Northern.
The Yellow Jackets placed third in the OAC meet.
BorderHawksfinish second
The Youngstown BorderHawks Squirt AA Minor Ice Hockey team finished as runners-up in Cleveland Suburban Hockey League.
Sunday. the BorderHawks lost to the Brooklyn Sharks in the championship game, 4-2 John Vanasdale and Ryan Rinko scored for the BorderHawks. Joe DiTomasso, Tanner Schultheis and Nick Sheets had assists.
Other players were John Welsh, Jesse Koewacich, Ryan Taylor, Forrest Smith, Anthony Patella, Louie Morocco, TJ Lindquist, Matt Kadar, Adam Hogan, and Nick Boniface.
The Hawks will compete in The Buckeye Cup Tournament in Parma, Ohio next weekend.

SEATTLE -- Clint Mathis and Landon Donovan each scored two goals, and the U.S. soccer team continued its strong play with a 4-0 victory over Honduras in an exhibition match at Safeco Field.

FERREIRAS, Portugal -- The U.S. women's soccer team beat England 2-0 in the Algarve Cup behind goals by Shannon MacMillan and Kelly Wilson.
The win puts the Americans into a first-place tie in Group B with Norway; the winner of their game Tuesday will advance to the tournament final.
