Veterans groupbestows award
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Vindicator is the winner of the 2002 Norman H. Dohn Memorial Award for continued excellence in reporting on veterans affairs and issues.
VFW State Commander Greg Vela presented the plaque this weekend to Roger Frye, commander of District 8, which includes the Mahoning Valley. Frye nominated The Vindicator based on weekly columns of veterans meetings, stories on veterans' receiving high school diplomas and other feature and news articles.
The plaque is named for Dohn, who was a professor of journalism at Ohio University and was editor of the Ohio VFW News for 20 years.
The award is given annually to the Ohio newspaper judged as best for reporting news of the deeds of Ohio's veterans during wartime and their subsequent service.
Previous recipients of the award include the Columbus Dispatch, the Akron Beacon-Journal and The Sandusky Register.
