Activities scheduled in July:
Tuesday: Summer Flowers, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Make a flower arrangement with fresh summer flowers. Call the Gardens to register. Fee: $25 resident, $32 nonresident.
Wednesday: Summerfest Spectacular, 7 p.m. Judge Morley Pavilion. Paul Rossi conducting the Youngstown Symphonic Band.
Friday to Aug. 11: Weller Gallery at the Davis Center, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Artist Valene Weeda's "Earthbound Spirit," a tractor-wagon ride, and visit the animals.
Next Sunday: Happy Birthday Ford Nature Center, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the center. Visit our displays in the Habitat Room, Live Animal Room, hands-on Discovery Room, and the Children's Library.
July 8 to 11: Junior Golf Camp. 8:30 to 10; or 10:30 to noon. Children ages 8 to 18 will receive six hours of basic instruction at the Par 3 Golf Course. Fee: $25R, $35NR.
July 9 to 12: Mill Creek Park Explorers, 10 a.m.to 3 p.m. Understand how our park came to be and how American Indians and early settlers lived in this area 200 years ago. Registration and fee due by Tuesday. Fee: $40R, $50NR.
July 10: Summerfest Spectacular, 7 p.m. Judge Morley Pavilion. Sugarfuzz Orchestra plays.
July 10: Rocky Chirchiglia Band Concert, 7 p.m., Yellow Creek Park, Struthers.
July 11: Scented Geraniums, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Learn to make jelly, tea, and fragrant tussie mussies, and receive cuttings and a plant to take home. Call the Gardens to register. Fee: $25R, $32NR.
July 11 or 12: Tell Me Why, 10 to 11 a.m. Preschoolers 3 to 5 years old are delightfully curious about the world. Children and an adult companion will learn about flowers and design one to make and take home. Call the Gardens to register. Fee: $5.
July 11 to Aug. 15: Boat Rides Into Nature, 2 to 3 p.m. A naturalist will accompany the passenger boat on three 20-minute tours of Lake Glacier. Register by calling Ford Nature Center on the Monday before you wish to attend. Not for organized groups. Meet at Lake Glacier Boathouse.
July 12: Family Farm Tours, 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Visit MetroParks Farm for a one-hour family tour. Enjoy a tractor-wagon ride and visit the animals.
July 12: Tournament: Snapple Five-Person Scramble, 10 a.m. shotgun start. Teams of one pro and four amateurs or five amateurs will compete on Mill Creek Park's North Course. Call the Pro Shop to register. Fee: $75 (includes lunch).
July 13-14: 1 p.m. The United States Colored Troops will confront the Confederates in a battle on the Covered Bridge at Lanterman's Mill. See additional displays and demonstrations each day.
July 14: Strollin' and Cruisin', 10 a.m. to noon. Walk around the Lily Pond followed by a hike to Lake Glacier to board the passenger boat. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Meet at the Lily Pond. About three miles, moderate difficulty with steep terrain.
July 16 & amp; 18: Tennis Camp, 9 a.m. Beginners of all ages can learn the basics of tennis at Yellow Creek Park. Bring your own racquet and water bottle. Call to register by July 12.
July 16 to 19: Nature Detectives, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Grades 2 to 3 completed. Campers will become sleuths to solve mysteries of nature. Get an up-close look at the variety of species from insects to mammals, and learn how they survive in the wild. Hikes are two miles or less. Registration and fee due by July 9. Fee: $40R, $50NR.
July 17: Summerfest Spectacular, 7 p.m. Judge Morley Pavilion. Fins to the Left, a Jimmy Buffet Tribute.
July 17: Rise & amp; Bloom, 8:30 to 10 a.m. Enjoy an early morning walk around Fellows Riverside Gardens and view the hosta in the shade garden. Savor a continental breakfast afterward in the Garden Cafe, and learn about this versatile foliage plant. Call the Gardens to register. Fee: $5R, $7NR.
July 18: Junior Golf Tournament, 8:30 a.m. Boys and girls ages 17 and under. Fee: $5. (Register July 10, 8 a.m. at the Par 3. In person or by phone).

July 19: Flower Fairy Walk. 10:30 to noon. Fairies are hiding in the Gardens and waiting to be discovered. Children 6 years old and up will walk to find flowers that are the favorites of the fairies and hear poems. Call the Gardens to register. Fee: $5.
July 19: Firefly Fun, 7:30 p.m. Preschoolers ages 2 to 5 and their families are invited to this evening presentation of Tales for Twos and Preschool Nature Hour. Listen to firefly stories, play games, and make a craft. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Fee: $3 per family.
July 19 to Aug. 23: 1 to 4 p.m. Junior high and high school golfers will meet at the Golf Course for six sessions of instruction and competitive golf. This camp is for intermediate and advanced golfers. Call the Pro Shop to register. Fee: $75.
July 20: Tournament: Buick Scramble, 10 a.m. start. Players will compete on Mill Creek Park's North Course. Participants will receive a $50 gift certificate. Winning teams advance to the sectional tour at Youngstown Country Club. Call the Pro Shop to register. Fee: $75 with USGA handicap; $85 without handicap (includes lunch).
July 20: Junior/Parent Golf Tournament, 10 a.m. Open to boys and girls 17 and under with a parent. Fee: $10 per team. (Register July 10, 8 a.m. at the Par 3. In person or by phone).
July 21: Library Anne's Story Garden, 1:30 to 2:30, Fellows Riverside Garden's Antonuci Library. Free program for children and adults.
July 21: Summer's Incredible Wild Edibles, 1 to 4 p.m. Join us for a slide presentation featuring wild berries, sassafras, and other native species. Then venture out on the trails to see growing habits and learn when to harvest. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Hike is one mile with hills and steps.
July 22: Elementary, My Dear Shakespeare, 10 a.m. to noon. Young actors and actresses (K-8th grade) rehearse and perform a simplified version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Rehearsals begin July 22 at Ford Nature Center. The performance is Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at Morley Pavilion. Fee: $10.
July 22 to 23: 7-UP Junior Golf Tournament, 8 a.m. Boys and girls 12 to 17 years old are invited to compete in this 36-hole junior tournament at Mill Creek Park Golf Course. Call the Pro Shop to register. Fee: $35 (includes lunch and a snack).
July 23 to 25: Summer Survival School, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Young adults 10 years old and up can take this course on orienteering skills, wild edibles, outdoor cooking skills and wilderness first-aid skills. Call Yellow Creek Park to register by July 8. Fee: $20R, $25NR.
July 24: Summerfest Spectacular, 7 p.m. Judge Morley Pavilion. Don Burns Orchestra.
July 25: Family Farm Tours, 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Visit MetroParks Farm for a one-hour family tour. Enjoy a tractor-wagon ride and visit the animals.
July 26: Safari -- A Garden Adventure, 6:30 p.m. Start up the Range Rover and head to the Gardens for the Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens' annual fund-raising garden party, dressed up "safari style." Experience the rhythms of nature, flora and fauna of Africa, and superb company as you track your dinner under the stars. Call the Gardens to be placed on the invitation list. Fee: $60 per person.
July 28: Sunfest, 1 to 4 p.m. Play in the sand with family and friends, and shape a 1-ton pile of sand into a work of art. $5 reserves a pile of fun in the sun. The Town Crier will judge the sculptures and award prizes. Call (330) 740-7107 to register.
July 28: Summerfest Spectacular, "Vegas," 5:30 p.m. and "The Motion," 7, at the Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating. Free.
July 29 to 31: AgCamp: "Down on the Farm," 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Grades 1 to 3 completed. Campers will go on an Agventure to learn about where food comes from. Activities include games, crafts, and hands-on activities. Held at the MetroParks Farm in cooperation with the Mahoning County Farm Bureau. Fee: $15.
July 31: Summerfest Spectacular, 7 p.m. Judge Morley Pavilion. Lonesome Road.
July 31: Moonlit Garden, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Learn how to plan and care for a garden that reflects the moon like the one at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Call the Gardens to register. Fee: $7.50R, $10.50 NR.
July 30 to 31: Summer At Hogwarts, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ages 6 to 9; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ages 10-12. Attend a special summer session of the famous School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Dress in costume and bring your lunch. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Fee: $10.
Aug. 7 & amp; 8: Curious Critter Camp, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children 5 to 6 years old hike the Yellow Creek Park trails and use their senses on this adventure. Critters commonly found in the area will be studied and activities and crafts will fill the days. Register by Aug. 1. Fee: $15R, $20NR.
