100th anniversary
NEW WATERFORD -- The Rev. Mark Wilhelm returns to his home church, Zion Lutheran, for the 100th anniversary celebration this Sunday.
The Rev. Mr. Wilhelm, a graduate of Crestview High School, was ordained into the Lutheran ministry in 1977. He and former pastors the Rev. Tom Rehl, Rev. Robert Simen, Rev. Bill Michaels and Rev. Jim Stuck will take part in the service at 9 a.m. Zion Lutheran's first service was June 4, 1899, at the New Waterford school, with the Rev. W.H. Lehman officiating. In the fall of 1901, construction of the church began with the laying of the cornerstone. The building was completed and dedicated May 11, 1902, at a cost of $1,855 with members and many residents of the community donating money toward the building, pews and bell.
The anniversary service will include Holy Communion with music by youths. Photos and videos of past events will available.
A time capsule containing items from 1902 and 1955 will be opened. A group photo will be taken at 11 a.m., and a luncheon will be served at noon.
Father, son pastors to speak Sunday
STRUTHERS -- Pilgrim Baptist Church will hold its annual Men's Day on Sunday. The theme is "The Extra-Ordinary Man ... The Extra-Ordinary Church," based on Philippians 2:5-8. The speaker at the 10:45 a.m. service will be the Rev. Lonnie Simon, and the speaker at the 4 p.m. service will be his son, the Rev. Kenny Simon from New Bethel Baptist Church in Youngstown. Dinner will be served after the morning service. The cost is $25. Call (330) 755-6756.
Fund-raiser set
BOARDMAN -- Youths from Old North Church in Canfield will have a carwash at Great Harvest Bread Co., 7684 Market St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Drivers will get a complimentary cookie. Donations will help send youths to a leadership conference.
Sandy Glass in concert
WARREN -- First United Methodist Church of Warren will host a concert performance featuring Sandy Glass at 7 p.m. July 7. Glass has been singing for more than 25 years throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states. She has recorded several CDs. Her latest was a Christmas CD released last year.
Celebration service
GIRARD -- Girard First United Methodist Church will observe "Celebrate America" at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Girard Community Band will play patriotic music during the worship service and the Vacation Bible School children will sing a song in honor of America. A potluck picnic featuring hot dogs, apple pie and other All-American treats will follow the service.
