Sharon Police Chief Thomas M. Burke wants to add a four-legged officer to the city police department.
Burke outlined his plan to council Thursday, saying he's already lined up donations to cover the entire $12,000 cost of starting up a canine unit.
The dog would be trained in drug detection but could also be used for tracking suspects, finding lost people, participating in building and open space searches, and even serving as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer in schools, he said.
A formal vote wasn't required, but council members verbally offered their support to the plan.
