Principals appointed
WARREN -- The school board appointed two principals Tuesday.
Karen Clayton, who works for Youngstown City Schools, was named principal of Garfield Elementary School, with a contract beginning Monday and running through June 30, 2004. Clayton's salary will be about $66,667.
Karen Thomas, assistant principal at East Middle School, will replace Kathleen Ciminero who resigned there.
Thomas, whose contract runs for the same period, will earn about $72,000.
The board issued high school diplomas to World War II veterans Matthias Bradley and Orlando M. Vannelli, both of Warren.
Ohio law allows school districts to award diplomas to state residents who left high school to serve in the armed forces, received an honorable discharge and was in the U.S. military between Sept. 16, 1940, and Dec. 31, 1946.
Board hires principal
LORDSTOWN -- The school board has hired Michael Alvetro of Warren as high school principal.
A physics and chemistry teacher at the high school the last four years, Alvetro replaces Larry Crawford, who resigned after 17 years to become educational supervisor at Trumbull Career and Technical Center.
Alvetro was selected from 20 applicants. He'll earn $54,000 for the one-year contract.
Registration set upfor all-day kindergarten
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield School District is conducting registration for all-day kindergarten.
Children may be registered at Seaborn Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
The district also is accepting applications for kindergarten pupils from surrounding districts under the open enrollment policy. Forms are available at the superintendent's office, 3750 N. Main St.
Registration for all other students is Aug. 12-14, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

HUBBARD -- The board of education has scheduled a special meeting for 7 a.m. Friday in the board room at 150 Hall Ave.
Some action will be taken.
Pact to be awarded
WARREN -- Signs and Blanks Inc. of Akron was expected to be awarded a contract by Trumbull County commissioners today on its low bid of $12,908 to supply highway signs to the county engineer.
Commissioners were also expected to hire the engineering firm of Lynn, Kittinger and Noble of Warren to design waterline improvements on King Graves Road in Vienna. The $20,500 contract will be paid from a Ohio Public Works Commission loan.
Another engineering firm, Taneri Engineering Inc. of Warren, was to get a $50,770 contract to design road, storm sewer and waterline improvements in the Bolindale area of Howland Township.
For an additional fee of $19,000, the company is expected to oversee the $600,000 project.
Funds for shelter
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners were to approve buying a $16,000 portable decontamination shelter today for the emergency management agency.
The device, which will be carried by the county HazMat team, will be paid for with money from the U.S. Department of Justice, which awarded $103,000 to the county agency.
Removing furniture
WARREN -- DiPillo's Office Furniture of Youngstown has agreed to pay $50 to take several truckloads of old office furniture off Trumbull County's hands.
County commissioners have been trying for several weeks to find a buyer for the furniture, which has been stored in the old jail building.
Officials estimated it would have cost $8,000 to take it all to the dump.
