Ferrari, driversfined $1 million
PARIS -- The Ferrari racing team and drivers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello were fined $1 million today for their conduct on the victory stand after last month's Austrian Grand Prix.
FIA, the sport's governing body, did not sanction Ferrari for its orders during the May 12 race. Barrichello was instructed to let Schumacher overtake him in the final stretch.
Ferrari was intent on strengthening Schumacher's lead in the Formula One standings.
After his second-place finish, Barrichello stood on the top step of the podium while the German national anthem was played for Schumacher.
After the race, Schumacher took the trophy from Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel. Without acknowledging the chancellor, he handed the trophy to Barrichello.
FIA ruled "it is the duty of each team to ensure that its contracted drivers observe the podium procedures and do not in any way embarrass the national authorities of the countries where a Grand Prix takes place."
The racing body said it deplored the way in which Ferrari ordered its drivers. However, it said it could not sanction the two drivers because they were contractually bound to carry out the instructions.
