YOUNGSTOWN Honors banquet planned
Many of the honorees were selected because of the work they do with young people.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Islamic Center is sponsoring its eighth annual Community Leadership Appreciation Banquet to recognize individuals who have contributed to the community's development and well-being.
The theme of the banquet is "Educating Our Youth For Shaping the Future of Humanity."The affair will be from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at St. Maron Hall, 1555 S. Meridian Road.
Good work
Many of the honorees were selected because of the work they do with local young people. This year's honorees are:
*Lock Beachum, president of the Youngstown Board of Education. He has served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal, and also served as the city's 2nd Ward councilman for many years. He has worked with young people as a coach and counselor in the Neighborhood Youth Program.
*Bernice Faseyitan, the interim regional director for Ohio State University's young scholars program. She has been with the program since 1989, helping dozens of students to pursue a college degree. The program offers economically disadvantaged youths the opportunity to obtain a full scholarship to OSU. Most of these young people are the first members of their family to attend college. Faseyitan guides and mentors her scholars from grade seven through high school.
*Richard Allen, executive director of the Boys & amp; Girls Club of Youngstown. He has dedicated himself to making the club a high quality recreation facility where young people can have fun, feel safe and appreciated, and expand their horizons.
*Dr. Fareedah Goodwin, a recent graduate of Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown.
*Jameelah M. Harris, a recent graduate of Miami University of Ohio.
*Na'eem Shaheed, a longtime member of the Muslim American Society.
