Workshop for parents offered
POLAND -- Dr. Robert C. Titzer, nationally known educator and researcher in the field of infant learning, will present a free "Baby and Toddler Early Learning Workshop for Parents" at Poland Library, 311 S. Main St., at 7 p.m. Thursday.
This program is based on his video series, "Your Baby Can Read!" -- which is available at the library.
Dr. Titzer has been featured on ABC, CBS and NBC programs as well as The Learning Channel and PBS.
At the workshop, parents of infants and toddlers will discover ways to motivate a baby or toddler to learn during a child's window of opportunity for learning language.
Titzer will demonstrate fun learning activities that parents can do with infants and toddlers to stimulate brain development.
The aim is to help build a solid foundation for a child's future learning. The workshop will cover topics such as reading, vocabulary, second languages, thinking, categorizing (animals, vehicles, colors, shapes, etc.), math, shapes and patterns, and music (classical and lullabies).
Early start
Many parents would like their baby to learn to read sooner. Is it possible for an infant as young as 9 months to learn to read? Titzer's research suggests that is a possibility. "Infants learn language very fast," Titzer says.
His method involves learning through all the different sensory modalities -- infants will look at the word, hear the word, say the word and do some physical action (such as arms up or clapping).
Dr. Titzer believes the idea of using multi-sensory method to learn is based on the latest theory of brain development that says if you learn through more than one sense at a time, you will have more detailed learning, especially if this sensory learning occurs during the initial learning.
