LISBON -- A former St. Clair Township physician will be retried on a charge of sexual battery, Tim McNicol, a Columbiana County assistant prosecutor, said Monday.
Dr. Anil Bajaj, 39, is accused of fondling a female patient last year. He was tried last week on the third-degree felony in county common pleas court.
Judge C. Ashley Pike declared a mistrial, however, after learning that two jurors had disobeyed his instructions and read a newspaper account of the trial.
A hearing is set Monday before Judge Pike, during which a new trial date may be set.
Transit driver award
LISBON -- Burnice Southall, also known as Bud, of East Liverpool has been named the Ohio Department of Transportation 2001 Transit Driver of the Year.
Gordon Proctor, ODOT director, said Southall has been a Columbiana County Community Action Rural Transit System driver for 18 years.
Proctor said Southall seldom misses work and has never been charged with an accident.
Proctor said Southall was nominated because of his great attitude and sense of humor with coworkers and passengers.
He said the office of transit selects the driver of the year from a list of nominees who possess qualities such as professional driving skills, dedication to the system, outstanding customer service and leadership.
Man dies of injuries
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said a Sharon man injured in a one-vehicle accident Friday morning on Keel Ridge Road died of his injuries Monday in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Marc R. Bartholomew, 41, of Memorial Boulevard, was pronounced dead at 5:51 p.m. of blunt force trauma to the chest, police said. Bartholomew was northbound on Keel Ridge Road when his pickup truck ran off the road just north of Neshannock Road and slammed into a tree.
Rape, assault charges
FARRELL, Pa. -- William L. Taylor, 38, of Wallis Avenue is free on $10,000 bond after his arrest on charges of rape, kidnapping, aggravated assault, indecent assault and making terroristic threats.
Police said Taylor was arrested at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at his home and arraigned Monday before District Justice Henry Russo.
Taylor is accused of picking up a 30-year-old Sharon woman near the Sharon-Farrell border earlier Sunday and driving her to a deserted area off Council Avenue in Wheatland where he sexually assaulted her, police said.
Burglary at store
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said prescription drugs appeared to be the target of a burglar at the Medicine Shoppe at 1020 E. State St. early today. Police said they were alerted by an alarm at the business at 12:09 a.m. and arrived to find the glass front door had been smashed out with a rock. Police said the store is doing an inventory to determine what's missing.
Probe of officer
BOARDMAN -- The township police department will hand the criminal investigation of a township officer to the Mahoning County prosecutor's office for review.
Police Chief Jeffrey L. Patterson said the final witness statements taken during the investigation of Lt. John M. Rosensteel will be turned over to the prosecutor today.
Rosensteel, 57, has been accused of abducting a Youngstown woman from the parking lot of the Ground Round restaurant on South Avenue on June 2.
Carrie Eckert, a 24-year-old waitress at the restaurant, said she and a friend had drinks with some Boardman officers after her shift. She said she ended up alone in the lot with Rosensteel and he forced her into his truck and drove her throughout the township.
Fair projects deadline
BAZETTA -- The deadline for adults to enter projects from livestock to artwork in the Trumbull County Fair has been extended to Saturday. The fair office is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday. For more information, call the office at (330) 637-6010.
Kids' ID program
HOWLAND -- Children will be photographed Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the Kids Care child identification program. The photos will be taken by Olan Mills Studios at Super Kmart during store hours. Howland Fire Department will have a firetruck on display, and police will do fingerprinting.
