Inmate showed no suicide signs, chief says

CAMPBELL -- The inmate who hung himself with his pants in the city jail last week didn't exhibit any suicidal tendencies while he was incarcerated, says Gus Sarigianopoulos, city police chief.
Nicholas M. Mastoris, 18, of Piccadilly Street, was picked up on a warrant for a probation violation around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday after police were called to a home in the 200 block of Robinson Road.
A resident there had called to report an unwanted person at the home.
Police reports say Mastoris slurred his speech and staggered while he was being booked and banged on his cell asking for cigarettes shortly thereafter.
An officer told Mastoris that he didn't have any cigarettes but that another officer would stop and get some for him. Later, reports state, Mastoris was given a cigarette, chatted with an officer and used the telephone. He also inquired about whether he was going to be transferred to the Mahoning County Jail.
Officers told him he would be staying at the Campbell lockup for the time being.
When an officer checked on Mastoris around 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, he found him hanging from his cell with one pant leg tied around his neck and the other around a cell bar.
A coroner's ruling is pending.
