CANFIELD -- A break-in was discovered Monday at Fusco's Cutting Edge, 5183 Western Reserve Road and reported to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department. The thief pried open a door lock to get inside. Missing is an air compressor, cement saw, three hedge trimmers and four string trimmers. The value was listed as unknown on the deputy's report.
Austintown beating
AUSTINTOWN -- A Niles man was treated Monday night at St. Elizabeth Health Center after he was beaten in a Westchester Drive parking lot. Police said David George, 26, of Woodglen Avenue, had several cuts on his face, which was swollen as a result of the beating, around 10:45 p.m. They later arrested a Youngstown man and charged him with assault.
A small blue bat was found in the Youngstown man's car.
George's girlfriend told police the Youngstown man, 26, of Calvin Street, is her ex-boyfriend. She said the Calvin Street man surprised her when she and George were in the parking lot. The Calvin Street man ran at the couple, and the woman said George told her to go into an apartment and call 911. The woman returned to find George beaten and the Calvin Street man missing. Police later stopped the man's car on Westchester Drive and arrested him. He told police that the woman is his girlfriend.
Counterfeit cash
CANFIELD -- Half of a counterfeit $20 bill that was used to buy food Monday afternoon at McDonald's here has been sent to the U.S. Secret Service for an investigation. A McDonald's employee said a white man in a red truck gave her the half of the bill after he had received food in the drive-through around 2 p.m. The employee said she thought the bill was folded, only to find it was half of a bill. When she asked the man about the bill, he replied, "at least I got my food," and drove away. Canfield police sent the bill to the Secret Service.
Damaged in road rage
BOARDMAN -- The Chevrolet Cavalier of a 17-year-old township woman was damaged after an episode described to township police as road rage. The woman said she was driving on West Boulevard near Old Shay Lane when she was passed on the right by a green Ford pickup truck, police said. She sounded her horn and the male driver, about 30 or 35, exited the truck and yelled at her. She activated her car alarm and he fled, hitting the driver's side corner of her back bumper as he drove away.
Rash of garage thefts
POLAND -- Village police are searching for a vehicle believed to be involved in a rash of thefts from garages in the village and surrounding communities, according to a police department posting. Police believe a truck seen with two male occupants may be responsible for the loss of lawn tractors, four-wheelers and small power equipment. Similar thefts have been reported in Austintown, Poland Township, Struthers, Hubbard, Lowellville and Liberty, the posting shows.
Drain-cleaner bombs
YOUNGSTOWN -- A woman in the 2100 block of Windsor Avenue who heard explosions in her front and side yard on Monday found remnants of five drain-cleaner bombs. She called police after finding two more plastic soda bottles in a tree that hadn't exploded. A Youngstown Fire Department captain collected the evidence for the arson bureau. A neighbor told police he heard explosions over the weekend in the area of Loveland Avenue, north of Windsor.
Fair projects deadline
BAZETTA -- The deadline for adults to enter projects from livestock to artwork in the Trumbull County Fair has been extended to Saturday. The fair office is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday. For more information, call the office at (330) 637-6010.
Kids' ID program
HOWLAND -- Children will be photographed Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the Kids Care child identification program. The photos will be taken by Olan Mills Studios at Super Kmart during store hours. Howland Fire Department will have a firetruck on display, and police will do fingerprinting.
