Former residentadvances to finals
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Joe Surack, fighting from the Kokomo School of Self Defense, won the International Kickboxing Federation North Central Regional competition in the super lightweight division on Saturday.
A former Valley resident, Surack defeated Matt Barber of Iowa with a TKO at 54 seconds of the first round.
Surack will represent the North Dentral Division at the IKF national competition in Davenport, Iowa, Aug. 2-4.
Surack won the Professional Karate Commission national kickboxing title in November.

PONTIAC, Mich. -- The Detroit Danger took a 21-0 first-half lead and beat the Cleveland Fusion 51-20 in National Women's Football League action Sunday at Wisner Memorial Stadium.
Youngstown's Lori Johnson had eight catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson caught a 70-yard pass from quarterback Sue Koziol late in the fourth quarter, and former Penguin Donna Wertz caught the two-point conversion pass.
Shannon Anderson, formerly of North Lima, added three receptions for 50 yards.
Moore winner onBuy.com Tour
FINDLEY LAKE, N.Y. -- Patrick Moore shot a 3-under par 68 Sunday to win the inaugural $425,000 Lake Erie Charity Classic, his second Buy.com Tour victory this year.
Moore, 32, posted a 9-under-275 total and waited as the final groups tried unsuccessfully to catch him. Moore's win wasn't secure until Hunter Haas missed a 16-foot birdie on the last hole that could have forced a playoff.
The victory was worth $76,500, and moved Moore into the top spot on the season money list with $161,498.
Paterno'sbrother dies
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- George E. Paterno, a longtime Penn State football broadcaster and brother of coach Joe Paterno, died Sunday, several days after he suffered a heart attack. He was 73.
Paterno started working for the Penn State football radio and television broadcasts as an analyst in 1976, one year after retiring as head football coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
He began as an analyst on delayed television broadcasts of Penn State games and moved to the radio booth in 1988.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron finished his career with his 7,141st trip to the winner's circle, his final ride a victory on Came Home in the $107,500 Affirmed Stakes.
Charge, Spiritplay to tie
SAN DIEGO -- Zhang Ouying scored in the 49th minute to give the San Diego Spirit a 1-1 tie with the Philadelphia Charge on Sunday night.
The Charge (7-1-3) remained unbeaten in six games, but were unable to avenge a 1-0 setback last month to the Spirit, which was the last victory by San Diego (2-6-3), which had lost four straight.
Spirit defender Fan Yunjie inadvertently scored a goal for the Charge in the 45th minute, following a shot by the Charge's Kerry Connors.

NUERBURGRING, Germany -- Rubens Barrichello led all the way to the finish line and won the European Grand Prix, beating fellow Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher by two tenths of a second.
