PITTSBURGH -- Two physician research groups at Magee-Women's Hospital received a $594,000 grant from Pfizer Inc. to study the effects of hormone-replacement therapy and oral contraceptives on women's health.
Dr. Sarah Berga, director of the division of reproductive endocrinology and endocrinology and a professor in the departments of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences and psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, received $376,000 for a study on the effects of hormone-replacement therapy on serotonin levels in the brains of post-menopausal women. Dr. Joseph Sanfilippo, vice chairman of reproductive sciences and professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, received $218,000, which is being shared with investigators from the Woman's Health Research Institute in Baton Rouge, La. The object of his study is to compare the effect of continuous oral contraceptive use to cyclic use in adolescents who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS.
Medical residency
BOARDMAN -- Physiatrist Associates of Youngstown, 1419 Boardman-Canfield Road, owned by Dr. Anthony N. Pannozzo, has been selected by the Ohio State University School of Medicine, Physical Medicine Department, for elective rotation for its residency program. Dr. Pannozzo, also a clinical assistant professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine, will also make the service available for family practice residents. Health awareness fair
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Community Health Center, 726 Wick Ave., offers its annual Community Health Awareness Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 28. Several human service organizations are participating, and there will be free blood pressure checks, glucose testing, body fat analysis and amblyopia testing, as well as free refreshments, face painting, raffle items and door prizes.
