Brothers and captains
AUSTINTOWN -- Two Austintown brothers, Daniel and Douglas Clark, have been promoted to the rank of captain in the Marine Corps and Air Force, respectively.
Daniel and Douglas are sons of Maurice and Anna Marie Clark of Austintown.
Daniel attended Austintown Fitch High School until 1980 and graduated in 1981 from Mount Diablo High School, Concord, Calif.
Douglas graduated from Austintown Fitch High School in 1989. He received bachelor of science and master of physician assistant studies degrees from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His promotion is effective Sept. 20, 2002.
Daniel is married to the former Julie Lynn Yonnotti. They reside in Oceanside, Calif., with their two daughters.
Daniel is a combat cargo officer aboard the USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3), an amphibious assault ship and aircraft carrier for helicopters, harriers and amphibious landing craft, based at the San Diego Naval Station, Calif.
Douglas and his wife, Jonli, live in Cabot, Ark., and have one daughter.
Douglas is a physician assistant with the 314th Medical Group, Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark.
Both men began their military careers as enlisted men.
Douglas joined the Air Force on March 5, 1990, and achieved the rank of staff sergeant before becoming an officer upon completion of the Physician Assistance Program.
Daniel, who joined the Marine Corps Oct. 23, 1980, was a gunnery sergeant when he was accepted for the Warrant Officer Program. He achieved the ranks of Warrant Officer, Chief Warrant Officer 2 and CWO3 before becoming a regular officer. His promotion to captain was effective June 13.
VETERANS
Wheelchair games
CLEVELAND -- Volunteers are needed for the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, coming to Cleveland for the first time July 9-13. More than 500 veterans are expected to participate in 15 events at 10 locations, including the Cleveland Convention Center, Cleveland State University Natatorium, Palisades Palace in Wickliffe, Gund Arena, and the Brecksville Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Volunteers are needed to assist in transportation, scoring, providing water and towels, cheering, meals, setup and tear-down of sites, registration, escorting veterans and other tasks.
Scheduled events include a health and fitness expo, 5K road race, archery, basketball, bowling, softball, table tennis, weight lifting, quad rugby, track events, swimming and others.
Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age, and anyone under 18 years of age must have a legal guardian sign the volunteer form. The VA and Paralyzed Veterans of America, sponsors of the event, ask that volunteers, individuals or groups sign up as soon as possible, but volunteers may register up to and on the day of the event.

ADVANCED TRAINING
Eligible for colonel
Navy Lt. Cmdr. James T. Hosack has graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The nonresident, six-phase course, completed over a 48-month period, qualifies officers to become eligible for promotion to colonel.
Hosack is a son of Earl and Shirley Hosack of Poland. He graduated in 1978 from Poland Seminary High School and received his bachelor's degree in 1995 and his master's degree in 1996, both from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va.
Navigator course
2nd Lt. Kevin J. Bishop has graduated from the Joint Specialized Undergraduate Navigator Training at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, where he received training in a T-43A swept-wing jet aircraft and T-45 navigation simulators.
Bishop is a son of Jim and Martha Bishop of Hubbard. He is a 1997 graduate of Hubbard High School and a 2001 graduate of Syracuse University, N.Y.
HONORS
Service medal
Major John Spagnola, a military policeman in the Ohio Army National Guard for 17 years, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for the period of Oct. 5, 2001, to May 31, 2002, for his service while activated for a Federal Aviation Security mission for Ohio's six major airports after the Sept. 11 attacks on America.
Spagnola was operations officer of the task force that controlled the mission requirements of all Ohio airports for the first two months in Columbus, and then became officer-in-charge for the soldiers assigned to Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna, wo provided security at the screening checkpoints.
Spagnola is a son of John and Elizabeth Spagnola of New Middletown, and lives in Poland Township with his wife, Jenelle, and a daughter, Anna. He is a 1985 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and received bachelor of science and master's degrees in business administration from Youngstown State University. Spagnola's civilian job is director of safety at PAM Transportation in North Jackson.
