LEETONIA -- So far, six residents have shown interest in serving on the village planning commission.
Although that's double the number needed for the five-member panel, Mayor Artie Altomare said others interested can still contact him.
The planning commission will consist of Altomare, one member of village council and three residents.
Altomare said he will recommend three residents at the council meeting, set for 6 p.m. July 10 at Wick Park -- council's only meeting in July.
Council must approve the mayor's recommendations.
Altomare and Village Administrator Gary Phillips told council in March they had been discussing the need to form a planning commission.
Development plans
Phillips said although at one time village code had provision for a planning commission, there has never been an active panel. One is needed now because of Leetonia's potential for development.
Council members have also said a planning commission is needed now because of the many projects under way, including the developing industrial park.
Phillips said he has been studying annexation possibilities for the village. He also reported that the school district will open a new school in the fall and that condominium and apartment complexes are in the works.
Village officials are also making plans for a sports complex south of town in Salem Township. Phillips said that property will be annexed into the village.
Phillips would like to see the planning commission meet as soon as possible after it is formed. He'll also suggest the panel attend planning commission meetings in the surrounding communities.
Altomare said residents interested in serving on the planning commission can notify him or Village Clerk Judy Garlough at village hall by phone or letter.
