YOUNGSTOWN -- Lou Jacquet, editor and general manager of the Catholic Exponent, the newspaper for the Diocese of Youngstown, received three awards recently at the 2002 Catholic Press Association convention in Minneapolis.
Jacquet's "Everyday Faith" column was chosen best in the nation in the Family Life category, and his book reviews received a best in the nation in the Culture, Arts & amp; Leisure category. His editorial on the flag, "So Proudly It Waves ... But Always for the Right Reasons?" earned third-place nationally for best editorial on a national issue.
Jacquet has been editor of the Exponent since 1996 and a journalist for 25 years. He's a member of St. Brendan Church.
Musical program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Holy Trinity Baptist Church will present Tanya D. Payne in a musical celebration at 5 p.m. Sunday. She released her own musical compilations on CD, titled "Hold On," in 1998.
The concert, "Because of Him I Am," will also feature the Mobley Singers, the Whitney Triplets, the Holy Bible Sunbeam Choir, Shellis D. Payne of Cleveland and the King's Dominion Choir of Holy Trinity.
Padre Pio event
NORTH JACKSON -- The National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon will honor the recent canonization of Padre Pio with a Mass atnoon, a meal at 1 p.m. and a holy hour and spiritual conference at 2:30 p.m. June 30. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Kevin Beaton, pastor of St. John the Baptist Church in New Castle, Pa., who lived at San Giovanni, the monastery of Padre Pio. Degree awarded
COLUMBUS -- Vernon T. Jones of Pickering, Ohio, a son of Bennett N. Jones Jr. and the late Emma B. Jones, received a master's of theological studies degree June 8 during Trinity Lutheran Seminary's 172nd commencement ceremonies. It is one of eight seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Jones is a Youngstown native who graduated from East High School in 1964, received a bachelor of arts degree from Youngstown State University in 1973 and worked for Youngstown Sheet & amp; Tube from 1964 to 1973.
Outdoor program
WARREN -- Worship in the Park at Courthouse Square will be at 10 a.m. June 30 with a sermon by Capt. Homer Williams of the Salvation Army and music by the Warren Brass Ensemble and Keith Rising of Second Christian Church.
Children's time will be led by Pastor Larry Mackey of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Offerings will go to the Potter's Wheel.
America celebration
GIRARD -- Girard First United Methodist Church will mark Celebrate America Sunday at 10 a.m. June 30. The Girard Community Band will play patriotic music during the worship service and vacation Bible school children will sing a song in honor of America. A potluck picnic will follow.
