Scrappers try to halt skid tonight at home
Mahoning Valley lost its third straight Thursday to Auburn 7-1 and will play host to Batavia at 7:05.
AUBURN, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers have returned home, seeking their first win of the season.
For the third consecutive game, the Scrappers were held to just four hits as they dropped a 7-1 decision to the Auburn Doubledays in the New York-Penn League Thursday at Falcon Park.
Mahoning Valley was swept by Auburn, also losing by scores of 3-1 and 4-3.
Took command
Thursday, the Doubledays (3-0) took command by scoring four runs in the third inning, led by Nom Siriveaw's two-run double and Cesar German's RBI single. Siriveaw went 2-for-4, with three RBIs and a run scored.
The Scrappers scored their only run in the fourth on an RBI double by Bill Peavey. Auburn made it 6-1 in the sixth on Brad Hassey's leadoff home run and an RBI single by Willie Rivera.
Auburn secured the victory when Sandy Nin thwarted a Scrappers eighth-inning rally in which they loaded the bases. Nin struck out Jeff Haase to end the threat and save the game for winner Brian Cardwell.
Jonathan Van Every had two of the Scrappers' hits, and Andrew Baxter added the other.
Blake Allen (0-1) made his professional debut on the mound for the Scrappers. He allowed four runs on six hits, with three strikeouts and one walk. Simon Young, Michael Hernandez and Chris White relieved Allen. Scrappers pitching walked seven batters.
The Scrappers (0-3) will play host to Batavia today at Cafaro Field, beginning at 7:05 p.m. Auburn looks to continue its hot streak when it visits Jamestown.
