MAHONING VALLEY Man gets jail time in burglaries

One judge sentenced the man to four years for the burglaries; the other judge gave him one year.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two judges have ordered a Salem man to serve a total of five years in jail for burglaries in Boardman, Canfield, New Middletown, Columbiana and Struthers.
Judge James Evans sentenced Russell Appenzeller, 38, of North Ellsworth Avenue, to four years in jail Wednesday for the burglaries. Appenzeller also received a year in jail from Judge R. Scott Krichbaum on June 14.
The sentences are consecutive, and Appenzeller was granted a total of 240 days for time served.
Appenzeller pleaded guilty to eight counts of burglary May 3 in Judge Evans' courtroom, and to receiving stolen property, possession of criminal tools, and possession of cocaine June 12 in Krichbaum's courtroom.
Arrested in February
Canfield police and Mahoning County deputy sheriffs arrested Appenzeller on Feb. 15 near Fairground Boulevard. A Fairground Boulevard resident called police around 10:30 p.m. and said a man had broke into his neighbor's apartment.
Police said they arrived to find Appenzeller carrying a screwdriver and a blue bag out the apartment's back door.
When police ordered Appenzeller to stop, he ran back into the apartment, out the front door and into a wooded area nearby. Police chased Appenzeller to the back of an office complex on Manor Hill Drive, where he was arrested.
Police said they found crack cocaine and stolen jewelry in Appenzeller's possession.
Appenzeller was later charged with committing burglaries along Southern Boulevard in Boardman on Feb. 15. Reports state that Appenzeller threw two cinder blocks through a garage window to enter one of the homes.
He also was charged with burglaries from residences on Meadowbrook Drive in New Middletown, Creed Street in Struthers and Village Court in the Mahoning County section of Columbiana.
