The Boardman High standout qualified for a national meet at Stanford University.
VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
Monica Cuevas, a member of the Boardman High girls track team, has qualified for the 800-meter dash at this weekend's United States Junior National Meet at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
Cuevas, who finished fourth in the state in the 800, qualified for the meet by running a school-record time of 2:12.9 at the Division I regional meet. The qualifying standard was 2:14.
Cuevas, who will be a senior this fall, will compete in a field of 18, which also includes college freshmen. The top two finishers qualify for the Junior World Championships in Jamaica later this summer.
Versatility
Cuevas is a part of three other Boardman school records, the 400 (57.2), the 4x400 relay (4:01.5) and the 4x800 relay (9:24.35). She has been academic All-Ohio the past two years with a grade point average of 3.90.
Cuevas competed in the 4x800 relay with teammates Brittany Durkin, Gina Mavrikis and Sarah Grabert at last weekend's adidas Outdoor National High School Championships.
The Spartans ran 9:37.83 to place 15th out of 26 teams. The team set the school record at this year's state meet, finishing fifth. Cuevas ran 2:16.78 in the 800 to place 24th out of 40. Ashley Kohler threw 115-3 in the discus to place 16th out of 24.
"I was pleased with the competitiveness these girls showed," Boardman coach Denise Gorski said. "I know they were a little tired from the state meet and it's tough to peak three weeks in a row. But these girls gave it everything they had and it was a great experience for them."
