SCRAPPERS Auburn registers another triumph

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost in the ninth inning to the Auburn Doubledays.
AUBURN, N.Y. -- Ernie Durazo singled home the game-winning run past a drawn-in infield, with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Auburn Doubledays a 4-3 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Wednesday in the New York-Penn League.
The loss was the second in as many nights to start the season for the Scrappers. The finale of the three-game series is tonight at Falcon Park, before Mahoning Valley returns to Cafaro Field for their home opener Friday night against Batavia.
For the second game in a row, the Scrappers were limited to four hits. Three of those came in the first two innings, when Mahoning Valley took a 3-0 lead. But the Scrappers were held to just one single the remainder of the game.
Haase gets 2 hits
Jeff Haase, an Eastlake native who played at Cleveland State, made his first start of the season as the designated hitter and got two of the Scrappers' hits. Normally a catcher, Haase is working his way back from elbow surgery.
Getting his first professional hit for the Scrappers was right-fielder Brian Wright, who played at North Carolina State. Wright also scored a run.
First baseman Andrew Baxter, with Rookie-League Burlington last season, doubled for Mahoning Valley.
Victor Kleine, who is in his third straight year with the Scrappers, made his first start of the season Wednesday. The left-hander from Florence, Ky., went 42/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and three walks.
Kleine struggled at times last season and wasn't given the luxury of a steady offense as he finished with a 1-8 record and 5.25 ERA.
Taking the loss
On Wednesday, Jahseam George and Kevin Martin relieved Kleine, with Martin (0-1) taking the loss after allowing Durazo's game-winning hit in the ninth.
The Doubledays recorded 12 hits off Scrappers pitching, with Willy Rivera and John Schneider each going 3-for-5. Auburn's Adam Peterson pitched the ninth inning for his first career win.
