LEETONIA Council awards contract for sidewalk project

A new generator would power water system pumps during a power outage.
LEETONIA -- Village council awarded a contract for sidewalk construction to Foust Construction Inc. of Girard.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said the $54,884 project is for a new sidewalk along Pine Street from Washington Street south to Main Street.
Phillips didn't give a start date for the project but said construction is to be completed by fall.
The council also approved an ordinance to establish a village planning commission. Phillips said the commission will consist of Mayor Artie Altomare, one council member and three residents. Phillips said Altomare will appoint the members.
Generator funds
Phillips told the council that Columbiana County commissioners have approved the village's request for a Community Development Block Grant to cover most of the cost of a generator for the village water system.
The request must now be approved by the state, Phillips said. The grant would pay $36,000 of the $39,000 cost, he said. The village will pay the balance, which includes engineering fees.
Phillips said the generator is needed so a power outage would not leave village customers without water. He said without a generator, the system cannot pump water from the wells to refill the water tower and storage tank.
If there were fires in the village during a power outage, several fire crews pumping from the hydrants would rapidly drain the tower and the storage tank, he said.
