Ronghi gets promotedto McDonald police chief
McDONALD -- Louis Ronghi was sworn in Tuesday as the village's new police chief.
Ronghi, 39, replaces Alan R. Deluga, who died June 7 from heart disease.
Ronghi was promoted to lieutenant last year. Sgt. William Woodley has been promoted to lieutenant, replacing Ronghi.
Ronghi, a board of education member, is a graduate of Niles McKinley High School and served three years in the Army. He worked for Federal Express 10 years before joining the department in 1995 as a part-time patrol officer.
He and his wife, Denise, have three sons.
Mathews school board
VIENNA -- The meeting of the Mathews Board of Education scheduled for tonight has been reset for 6 p.m. next Wednesday in the board offices at 4434-B Warren-Sharon Road.
There will be an executive session to interview candidates for maintenance supervisor.
Van pulled from lake
CORTLAND -- A fire department diver hooked a submerged van to a tow truck, which removed it from Mosquito Lake at 8:54 p.m. Tuesday.
The van went into the water at 7:22 p.m. from a boat ramp near the beach on the southwest shore of the lake, a 911 supervisor said.
Nobody was in the van.
Niles police schedule422 enforcement blitz
NILES -- Police will again conduct intense traffic enforcement along Youngstown-Warren Road and all major roads leading to U.S. Route 422.
Starting Friday, police will target aggressive and unsafe driving, impaired drivers, and seat-belt and child-restraint violators. The extra patrols will operate for a week from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily, and from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Zoning for garage
CHAMPION -- The township board of zoning appeals has granted a request by David and Jenny Mayse, 371 Raymond Ave., for a variance.
The couple applied for a permit to build a 24-by-24-foot garage, then built a 24-by-36-foot garage.
Mayse told the board he thought the builder would file the change with zoning inspector John Ghindia, but Ghindia did not learn of the change until after the job was done. Mayse then applied for a variance.
The board fined the couple $50 for the change.
Stained-glass thievesstrike again in Sharon
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said the stained-glass window thieves were at it again in the city. The thieves have the same method of operation -- entering a vacant home through a basement window during the night and removing the windows without neighbors' hearing or seeing anything.
This time, they struck at a vacant house in the 300 block of Cedar Avenue sometime Thursday or Friday. Two first-floor windows were removed from their frames, police said Tuesday.

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Area residents could set both personal and world records this Fourth of July.
A New Mexico man is organizing an event for first-time sky divers from 400 drop sites around the world, including the Grove City Airport, that he hopes will break a world record.
