Scrappers beatExpress, 1-0
NILES -- Matt Knox went 3-for-3 and three pitchers combined on a shutout as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers blanked the Youngstown Express 1-0 in an exhibition game Sunday at Cafaro Field.
The Scrappers scored the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Dave Wallace.
Shane Wallace started on the mound for the Scrappers, allowing five hits, with three strikeouts and two walks. Todd Culp and Kevin Martin didn't allow a hit in their combined two innings of relief work.
Mahoning Valley opens the New York-Penn League season Tuesday night in Auburn, N.Y., against the Doubledays. The home opener is Friday at 7 p.m. against the Batavia Muckdogs.
YSU's Johnsonin World Bowl
RHEIN, Germany -- Rhein Fire's Tim Johnson, a Youngstown State University graduate, will play against the Berlin Thunder in the NFL Europe's World Bowl X Sunday at Diisseldorf. The game will be on Fox at noon.
The Fired ended the regular season with a 7-3 record, while Berlin finished (6-4). Johnson started at outside linebacker and had a team-high 57 tackles, including 36 unassisted stops. He also had seven pass breakups, two sacks and an interception.
A linebacker at YSU, Johnson was an All-American.
Rain washes outMercer racing
MERCER, Pa. -- Persistent showers washed out action for the fifth time this season Saturday night at Mercer Raceway Park.
Saturday night will be a complete show of sprint cars, big-block modifieds, sportsman modifieds and stock cars. It's Jr. Fan Night, featuring the Nickelodeon "Rugrats." Prior to the racing it will be "Meet Your Heroes Night" featuring the sportsman modifieds. Kids bike races will be held at intermission.

West wins in playoff
JOHNSTON, Iowa -- Lori West three-putted the final three holes of regulation in losing a two-stroke lead, then made a 3-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the Hy-Vee Classic.
The victory in the senior event was the first professional win for the 46-year-old West, who has played the LPGA Tour since 1984.
West finished with a 2-under 70 to join Patty Sheehan (71), Jan Stephenson (70) and Elaine Crosby (68) at 4-under 140 after 36 holes on the Hyperion Field Club north of Des Moines.
Marty McSorleyhired as coach
PHOENIX -- Marty McSorley, whose NHL career ended in a one-year suspension for hitting an opponent in the head with his stick, was hired as coach of the Phoenix Coyotes' top farm club.
McSorley was suspended for a year for hitting Vancouver's Donald Brashear on the side of the head with his stick in 2000. Brashear was knocked unconscious and missed 20 games with a severe concussion.

LE MANS, France -- Audi swept the top three places in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro became the first trio to win the event three years running.
Hewitt wins againat Queen's Club
LONDON -- Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt won his third consecutive Queen's Club grass-court championship after overcoming Tim Henman 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Hewitt, the world No. 1 player, is the first player to win three straight Queen's Club titles since John McEnroe completed the feat in 1981.
Kafelnikov beatsNicolas Kiefer
HALLE, Germany -- Yevgeny Kafelnikov rallied to win the Gerry Weber Open for the third time, ending the upset run of Nicolas Kiefer, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Kafelnikov nearly was forced to quit with a foot injury that he has had since May. It won't cause him to miss Wimbledon, which starts in a week.
Armstrong bestin tuneup race
GENEVA -- Lance Armstrong won the Dauphine Libere, his last tuneup race before bidding for a fourth straight Tour de France title.
