Bank robber sought
LIBERTY -- Police were looking this morning for the robber of Charter One Bank at 4333 Belmont Ave.
Police Chief Anthony Slifka said a man entered the bank shortly before 9:30 and threatened a teller.
No weapon was seen.
He was given an undisclosed amount of money.
Slifka said the robber fled south on Belmont.
Women hurt in jump
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two women were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center after they were forced to jump from a second-story window to escape a fire.
The women -- Marilyn Sinkovich, 41, and Karen Phillips, 23 -- injured their ankles after jumping from the window at 1328 East Florida St., shortly after dropping a child from the same window, firefighters said.
The child suffered no injuries, and no condition report on the women was available from St. Elizabeth's.
According to officials, a fire broke out in the living room at the base of the stairs about 2:30 a.m. today.
Seven people were in the home, but all escaped without serious injury.
Eighteen firefighters and two officers responded to the scene.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, which caused between $25,000 and $30,000 in damage.
The home was boarded up by officials.
Trespassing charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police issued 20 citations for criminal trespassing after breaking up a gathering at a local business.
While on routine patrol, officers noticed a large crowd gathered at the Phar-Mor store, 3730 Market St., at 2:40 a.m. Sunday.
Misdemeanor trespassing charges were issued to all present, and a 21-year-old West Warren Street man also was charged with carrying a concealed weapon after police found a .25-caliber handgun, live rounds and a magazine for the gun in his vehicle.
Armed robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A video store clerk told police he was robbed while doing paperwork.
According to reports, a man entered L.A. Video store, 3502 Mahoning Ave., about 5 p.m. Sunday and pointed a handgun at the clerk, demanding money.
After the clerk gave him $200, the suspect ushered him into a back room and ordered him to face the wall and place his hands there while he continued to search and ask for more money.
The suspect left and headed east on Mahoning when he heard a customer enter the store.
The suspect is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 150 pounds with black hair. He was wearing black or blue pants, a black or gray shirt and a dark gray hat.
Facing charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A West Dewey Street man told police his girlfriend attacked him with a knife while he was on the phone.
The man said he was talking with another woman at 10:50 p.m. Sunday when his live-in girlfriend became upset, went into the kitchen, got a knife and cut his left forearm.
The woman then fled to a neighbor's home, telling the resident she was going to kill her boyfriend because she couldn't take it anymore, reports said.
The girlfriend faces a charge of felonious assault, police said.
Mailbox explosion
YOUNGSTOWN -- Arson investigators are trying to determine the cause of a home mailbox explosion.
A Rosewood Avenue woman told police she heard the blast at 1:45 a.m. today, then heard her mother and 7-year-old daughter screaming.
According to reports, when the woman came downstairs where the others had been sleeping, she found her mailbox, which was attached to the front of her home, had exploded through the wall, smashing a living-room table and imbedding glass and metal fragments in the wall.
The back door of the mailbox landed in the kitchen.
