ACADEMY GRADUATES
Ruth A. Jarabek
Army 2nd Lt. Ruth A. Jarabek graduated June 1 from the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and will be stationed in Germany after completing the officers basic course at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
During her time at the academy, Jarabek, a 1996 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, was on the Dean's List each year, twice received the Superintendent's Award, received the Gold Wreath and Star Award during her junior year, became airborne qualified and earned the Bronze German Proficiency Badge.
Jarabek was a member of the Forensic Team, and in 1999 received 2nd place in the New York State Forensics Finals, in 2001 received the Richard Whitefield Award for excellence in public speaking and was one of four cadets picked to represent West Point at the International Speech Tournament in Rome, Italy, in March 2002.
She is the daughter of Joseph and Myrlynn Jarabek of Youngstown. She spent two years at TriState University in Angola, Ind., before entering the academy, where she received a degree in environmental engineering.
Norman L. Vujevicand George M. Denehy
Air Force 2nd Lts. Norman L. Vujevic and George M. Denehy graduated from the Air Force Academy, Colo.
Vujevic received a bachelor of science degree in English and is scheduled to attend undergraduate pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base, Miss. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Vujevic Sr. of Burghill and grandson of Mary Kolat of Brookfield.
Denehy received a bachelor of science degree in general engineering from the academy and is a project engineer in the military satellite program at Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif.
While at the academy, he was a member of the football team for two years as a junior varsity offensive lineman. He worked as 1st basic cadet training safety-medical NCO; he was a counselor at the Falcon Sports Camp, training NCO, training officer and element leader and received the Commandant's Pin.
He is the son of George and Mamie Denehy of Lowellville and a 1997 graduate of Lowellville High School.
VETERANS
U.S. Army Week
Youngstown Mayor George McKelvey and Boardman Township Administrator Curt Seditz are among governmental officials who commemorated the Army's 227th anniversary on Friday with proclamations and designated June 14-June 21 as U.S. Army Week in their respective communities.
Second place
WASHINGTON -- The Department of Veterans Affairs received the second highest score among 24 federal agencies in an independent study by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University of performance reports, behind only the Department of Transportation.
Free health screenings
BUTLER, Pa. -- The VA's Butler Medical Center is offering free health screenings for veterans from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday at 325 New Castle Road. Veterans wanting cholesterol screening must fast from 8 to 12 hours before the clinic, and those applying for a doctor's appointment must provide a copy of the DD 214 or equivalent active duty discharge papers.

HONORS
Exceptional service
Army Staff Sgt. Jerome I. Thomas has received the Army Commendation Medal for exceptional service and outstanding performance of duty while assigned to numerous duty positions with Bravo Battery, 3rd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery regiment, 101st Airborne Division.
Among his achievements was being selected to perform displays and cannon salutes for visiting VIPs at Fort Campbell, Ky., including the Vice President. He also was instrumental in developing a standard certification for the battalion ammunition section that will be utilized as the measuring stick with which ammo sections will be certified for future operations. Thomas, a 1985 graduate of Youngstown South High School, is the son of Jesse and Becky Thomas of Youngstown. He and his wife, the former Yvonne Neal, a 1985 graduate of The Rayen School, Youngstown, live at Fort Campbell and have four children.
