YOUNGSTOWN Historical society will unveil portrait at annual event

The portrait was recently repaired.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The first showing of an 1821 portrait of Dr. Henry Manning, one of Youngstown's earliest physicians, will highlight the 127th annual dinner meeting of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.
The event will be at 5:30 Tuesday in the Arms Family Museum of Local History. Cost is $45 for MVHS members and $50 for nonmembers.
Reservations must be received by Friday. Checks should be made out to and sent to the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44502.
During his career in Youngstown, Dr. Manning served as a surgeon for Col. William Rayen during the War of 1812, as state senator in 1824 and was appointed president of the Mahoning County Bank in 1854. He died in 1869.
The portrait, recently repaired and conserved by the Inter-museum Conservation Association in Oberlin, was donated by his granddaughter, Helen Manning Schumann Lupse, and will be part of an exclusive showing of some of MVHS' rarest artifacts at the annual meeting.
The portrait will then be on view for the general public at the Arms Museum.
The MVHS, founded in 1875, operates the Arms Museum and the MVHS Archival Library.
