SHARON, PA. Pickup crashes into church

The truck will be examined for mechanical problems, police said.
SHARON, Pa. -- The Rev. John Trojak was meeting with four of his parishioners at the First Baptist Church on West State Street about improvements to the building when they saw a truck travel down a nearby alley, cross the church parking lot and crash into the church.
"We saw it coming. There was no way he could have stopped," Trojak said.
Police said the pickup truck was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed before crashing into a beam of the church. Driver Terry Stevenson, 36, of Masury, Ohio, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition was not available this morning.
No one inside the church was injured in the crash, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Assessing damage
Pastor Trojak said the beam likely kept the truck from moving farther into the building. They are still trying to determine if there is structural damage.
Numerous windows were broken and had to be boarded up after the crash, he said. They were still cleaning up glass this morning.
Trojak said that portion of the church, an education wing, was built in the 1960s. The committee was meeting to talk about making improvements to the sanctuary, which was built in 1883.
Police said they are still investigating the cause of the crash. The 1991 Chevrolet pickup will be examined for mechanical failures, they said.
