YOUNGSTOWN -- A man in sunglasses held a white rag over his mouth and told the clerk at the BP gas station on East Midlothian Boulevard Tuesday night: "I am not kidding. Just open the drawer. Don't hit any buttons." The clerk told police he opened the register and the thief grabbed the cash, about $80, then left, telling the clerk, "Don't move." The clerk didn't see any weapon. The station's video camera recorded the episode.
Attempted break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- A West Side man flagged down a cruiser around 1:45 a.m. today on Mahoning Avenue and told the officer that he'd seen two men in ski masks try to break into Schenley Carryout, adding they ran when he yelled. Police discovered two windows had been broken out at the store at 2725 Mahoning. At an open garage in the 200 block of South Hazelwood Avenue, officers found a red ski mask, hammer, backpack, gym bag and drill bit.
School renovations
POLAND -- Renovations and upgrades should start at Poland Union Elementary School as early as next week. Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Zorn said the board of education awarded contracts at a special meeting Sunday for work on the school's electrical and heating and air conditioning systems: Dickey Electric of North Lima (electrical), with a low bid of $45,720; York-Mahoning Co. of Youngstown (heating and air), $388,750. Neither company is currently performing work at other Poland schools, Zorn said. The work is expected to be completed in time for the start of fall classes.
Injured by sliding door
CANFIELD -- A 39-year-old Maple Springs Drive woman suffered two broken toes when her live-in male companion pushed a sliding door across her foot at her home, she told police. She said the 50-year-old man also made threats to break her left arm, police reports show. She was treated at Forum Ambulatory in Austintown. No arrest was made.
Stolen credit card
AUSTINTOWN -- Transactions totaling $4,700 and made from a residence in Roanoke, Va., were charged to a Canfield man's credit card. The cardholder received a letter from Capitol One informing him of the charges, all made May 23. The cardholder said he received several phone calls from a man whose name appears on the charges, but he told the cardholder he was from Capitol One. The cardholder said he had not used the card for four years, police reports show. The account has since been closed, and the suspect denies knowledge of the transactions.
Clerk assaulted
STRUTHERS -- Police arrested a 45-year-old Youngstown man just before 4 p.m. Monday in the assault of a clerk at the Goodwill Store, 466 Youngstown-Poland Road. According to police reports, the man entered the store and browsed for several minutes before approaching the front checkout counter where he stood and stared at the clerk. When the clerk asked if she could help him, the man said he was just resting. Police reports say he continued to stare at the clerk several more minutes before she asked him to leave. The man started shouting profanities and swung his fists at the clerk, lunged over the counter, struck her, then fled, the reports show. Police picked him up near the intersection of Midlothian Boulevard and Youngstown-Poland Road.
Bullets fired into store
PULASKI, Pa. -- Shots were fired into the Adultland XXX bookstore on U.S. Route 422 this morning, said state police. They said a semi-truck driver who had slept in his vehicle awoke around 5 a.m. and saw a man walk to the front of the store, which was closed, and fire three shots through the front door. The man is described as 6 feet tall, about 180 pounds, police said. No other description was available and it's unclear from police reports how much damage was done to the store.
Model train show
NILES -- More than 70 tables of collectible model trains and accessories will be set up throughout the Eastwood Mall complex Friday through Sunday for the Model Train and Collectible Show. Vendors will sell merchandise, and the Western Reserve Railroad Club will build a 20-by-40-foot train track in front of the mall's customer service booth.
