Man dies in crash
CHAMPION -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-car crash that claimed the life of a 72-year-old Bristolville man. The patrol said the crash took place around 1:10 p.m. Monday on state Route 45. A vehicle driven by Phyllis A. Adams, 61, of Bristolville was heading south when a car driven by Leander Husk was traveling north. Husk's car went left of center, striking Adams' car, the patrol said. Husk died moments after the crash; Adams is at Cleveland Metro Health Center in serious condition.
Four passengers in Adams' car were also injured. Charles V. Benchia, 10, of Bristolville is in St. Joseph Health Center in serious condition. Jacquelina R. Adams, 16, of Bristolville, is at St. Elizabeth Health Center in serious condition. Tonnya Fisher, 39, of Warren is also at St. Elizabeth in serious condition, and Jan Fisher, 1, of Warren was treated at St. Joseph.
History Day participant
NILES -- Katie Marburger of Edison Junior High will present her project for this year's National History Day at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History on Wednesday. More than a half-million pupils nationally in grades six through 12 submitted projects based on this year's theme, "Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History."
Katie's presentation is titled "... And Justice for All? The Imprisoning of the Japanese-Americans: A Revolution in Discrimination." The 17 works being presented at the museum are part of a larger group of pupil finalists participating in the National History Day contest at the University of Maryland this week.
Zone-change hearing
WEATHERSFIELD -- The township zoning commission will hold a public hearing about a zone change at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Weathersfield Township Administration Building. The change is from Agricultural and Commercial A to Commercial B for a 5.7-acre parcel between Sheetz and Interstate 80 on Salt Springs Road. According to the zoning office, nothing specific has been planned for the plot if the zoning is changed, but it would allow more opportunities for commercial building. The land is owned by Kirila Realty.
Enforcement on 422
NILES -- Police here will conduct a traffic enforcement blitz along U.S. Route 422 and all major roads leading to it Thursday through Sunday. Police will target aggressive and unsafe driving, impaired drivers, speeders, and seat-belt and child-restraint violators. The extra patrols will operate from 6 p.m. until midnight daily and until 3 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The blitz is funded through a grant provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
Guilty plea in rape case
WARREN -- Edward Clark, a 58-year-old retired college professor from Ashville, N.C., has pleaded guilty to raping an 8-year-old girl.
Prosecutors are recommending that Judge John M. Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court sentence Clark to 20 years in prison.
Clark pleaded guilty Monday to five counts of rape, three counts of gross sexual imposition and five counts of pandering obscenity.
He once taught English at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.
Investigators found pornographic pictures and a short video on Clark's computer, said Thomas Wren, an assistant county prosecutor. A search by the North Carolina Bureau of Criminal Investigation found thousands more in his home, he said.
Clark's trial was to have begun Monday.

AUSTINTOWN -- A McDonald man has won $100,000 in the June 5 Buckeye 5 lottery game.
Donald K. Drumm filed his claim for the prize at the regional lottery office here Monday.
After taxes, Drumm will get a check for $69,500.
He let the computer at JR's Drive Thru in Girard pick the winning numbers: 6, 19, 25, 29, 35.
Robbery probe finds car
COLUMBIANA -- Police have the car they think was used in a robbery May 31 at National City Bank on state Route 164, Police Chief John Krawchyk said today. He said the car was found in Monaca, Pa., and towed here. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation will examine the car, he said. Witnesses said a male robber fled the bank in a small blue-green car with Pennsylvania registration and the trunk lid tied down.
