YOUNGSTOWN -- A loose pit bull on the South Side late Monday night ran toward his Cameron Avenue home when Patrolman John Hull raised his shotgun and yelled "go home." Jason Rotan, 24, of Cameron Avenue was charged with allowing a vicious dog to run free. Rotan was also charged with failing to appear in court on a previous charge of driving with an expired license.
Hull first confronted the dog in the 800 block of Mabel Street, barking at a young girl who was too afraid to move. The officer distracted the dog and the girl ran inside her house. The dog also charged at Hull and a man who had just pulled his car into a driveway on Cameron. Rotan told the officer that the dog belongs to his brother and had broken free from a thin leader line tied to a tree.
Police investigate three vehicle break-ins
BOARDMAN -- Police are investigating several vehicle break-ins. A Robinwood Place man reported property stolen from his vehicle Monday morning. Sometime during the night a suspect broke a small vent window on the driver's side of the vehicle. A black CD case and 220 CDs valued at $2,025 were reported stolen. A Mathews Road man reported several items missing from his vehicle at 7:15 a.m. A CD player, speakers, amplified and CDs were missing. A LeMans Drive man reported his vehicle was entered and property removed. An in-dash CD player and CDs valued at $1,000 were missing. Damage to right doorlock assembly was valued at $100.
Teen-ager burned
CAMPBELL -- An Adams Street teen-ager suffered minor burns after another teen began waving around a shirt he had set on fire.
According to reports, the 15-year-old boy was walking home from school early Friday afternoon when another boy took a shirt from a third student, lit it on fire and started swinging it, striking the Adams Street boy on the right side. He was burned where the shirt stuck to his body, as well as on his left hand from when he removed the shirt.
Two cards stolen
BOARDMAN -- Police are investigating thefts from two Boardman women. A 23-year-old West Boulevard woman reported Monday that someone stole her Sky Bank ATM card and withdrew $800 at various locations. The other woman, 57, of Hitchcock Road was alerted by Discover of numerous fraudulent purchases on her card totaling $1,200.
Attempted robbery of Chinese restaurant
CAMPBELL -- Police are searching for a suspect in the attempted robbery of a local Chinese restaurant.
An employee of Main Moon Restaurant, 671 McCartney Road, said a black male wearing all-black clothing and something black over his face entered the eatery at 10:18 p.m. Saturday and tried to open the register. When the man could not get the drawer open, he fled the restaurant and ran toward Lincoln Knolls Plaza, reports said.
Police searched the area, but did not locate the suspect, who is described as between 5 feet, 10 inches and six feet tall and weighing 165-185 pounds.
Unwelcome visitor
CANFIELD -- Over the weekend, a Boardman man who continued to visit a home in the 6300 block of Leffingwell Drive after first stopping there a month ago for a garage sale was warned by a Mahoning County deputy sheriff to stay away. A woman at the house said she feels uncomfortable with his visits, his attempts to learn her children's names and befriend the family dog. The man explained to the deputy that he is Cuban and that being friendly and visiting is customary in his country. The deputy explained to the man that the visits are unwelcome and he will be arrested if he shows up again.
Florist break-in
BOARDMAN -- Dick Adgate Florist, 4527 Market St., was broken into Monday morning. A bank bag, deposit envelope and several personal checks were stolen from the greenhouse and safe room. More than $1,000 was reported missing.
Robbery probe finds car
COLUMBIANA -- Police have the car they think was used in a robbery May 31 at National City Bank on state Route 164, Police Chief John Krawchyk said today. He said the car was found in Monaca, Pa., and towed here. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation will examine the car, he said. Witnesses said a male robber fled the bank in a small blue-green car with Pennsylvania registration and the trunk lid tied down.
