OFFICERS Installation is held by Symphony Guild



Mary Walton, a 14-year member of the organization, was seated as the new president.
VIENNA -- Youngstown Symphony Guild installed officers for the 2002-2003 season during a meeting held May 8 at Squaw Creek Country Club.
Mary Elaine Walton of Canfield was inducted as president of the organization. Emily Powers performed the ceremony, and also inducted were Walton's associate officers, Susan Huber, administrative vice president/president-elect; Carol Sankovic, vice president; and Stephanie Hunter, corresponding secretary.
Retaining their present positions are Irene Costakis, treasurer, and Laura Uram, recording secretary.
The new leader
Walton joined the organization in 1988 when she came to the area from New York. She served on the Symphony Society board of directors for two terms and served as ball chairman in 1994.
She is a past president of Mahoning County Medical Alliance, served on its board of directors and is historian/publicity chairman.
Walton received the GEM award from the Medical Alliance in March, was named Woman of the Year by the YMCA, and serves on the Y-Women Committee. She is a graduate of Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, and is a member of Chautauqua Women's Club, Chautauqua Development Fund and American Scandinavian Heritage Foundation. She serves on the advisory committee for Sojourner House.
She attended New York and Kent State universities, and completed studies at the University of Akron Life Span Development and Gerontology Department. A member of Sigma Phi Omega in gerontology and the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education, she delivered the paper "Music and Alzheimer's" at the 1995 conference and continues music therapy for the elderly.
She and her husband, Dr. Ralph Walton, have two children.
