DAYTON -- Adam Chatman planned on going to bed early Friday night.
He wanted a good night's rest. Stay focused. Stay loose.
"A lot of people come down here and party and go to bed late," the Ursuline senior said. "I wasn't going to do that."
Chatman qualified for today's finals in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles at Friday's Division II state track meet at Welcome Stadium. He had the fastest qualifying time in the 300 and won his heat in the 110.
"I really wasn't trying to win it," he said. "I just wanted to move on."
Chatman made it to state in the 300 hurdles last year, but hit the second hurdle during the preliminaries and fell. Before the 110 hurdles, his teammate, Amber Miller, hit a hurdle and fell.
"That's not what I wanted to see," he said. "Amber helps me out and we give each other pointers. But she'll be alright."
He won't have Miller, but he still has his coach, Art Carter.
"I don't mention him a lot, but he's the reason I'm here," Chatman said of Carter. "He plays the daddy role. I do what he tells me."
Moving on
Salem senior Jason Greenamyer finished fifth in his heat in the 110 hurdles to just miss qualifying for the finals. The top four in each heat advance.
Greenamyer rebounded to finish second in his heat in the 300 hurdles.
"I went into the 110s not concentrating as much as I should have," Greenamyer said. "It made me mad. It made me concentrate more."
This is Greenamyer's first trip to state. He was the only one from Salem's boys team to advance.
"I was nervous," he said. "I'm used to running with the team. This is the first time without anyone knowing me. But it's nice to be here my senior year. I finally made it."
Lakeview's 4x100 relay team of Josh Province, Matt Shaw, Neil Fiest and Jarred Grzywna qualified for the last spot in the finals with a time of 43.88.
Wilson junior Edward Fetuah and Brookfield junior Lou Scudere qualified for the finals in the 200. Fetuah and Beaver Local junior Scott Weiser failed to qualify in the 400.
Campbell sophomore Darrin Johnson failed to qualify in the 100 and Beaver Local's 4x400 relay also failed to qualify.
