WORLD CUP ROUNDUP First-round games
Senegal 1, Denmark 1
DAEGU, South Korea -- Salif Diao capped a brilliant play with the tying goal as Senegal followed its stunning opening win over France with a tie. Denmark held a halftime lead after Jon Dahl Tomasson converted a penalty kick in the 16th minute for his third goal of the World Cup. The Senegalese, in their first trip to soccer's showpiece event, had the bulk of possession, but appeared disjointed in the absence of captain Aliou Cisse (calf injury). But when coach Bruno Metsu inserted Henri Camara at midfield after halftime, suddenly the direction changed. Camara created a chance for striker Ell Hadji Diouf a minute after the break. He then grabbed possession deep inside his own half in the 52nd minute to spark the attack that resulted in Diao's goal. Diao received the final pass from Khalilou Fadiga, slid between two defenders and used the outside of his right foot to beat goalkeeper Thomas Soerensen for the goal. His heroics were short-lived, as the midfielder was red-carded for a hard tackle on Rene Henriksen in the 80th minute. That left Senegal a man short for the rest of the match. Senegal needs only a tie in its final group game with Uruguay to advance to the second round. The crowd of 43,500 crowd got behind Senegal, despite only a few dozen Africans sitting among them draped in the red, yellow and green national colors and constantly pounding drums. Tomasson, who scored in each half against Uruguay last Saturday, got his third with a right-footed penalty kick into the left corner of the net. He found the net again in the 20th minute, but the goal was negated because he pulled the shirt of a defender in a race for the ball and was yellow-carded. Papa Bouba Diop, the goal-scorer against France, didn't get enough height to steer a header from Fadiga's pinpoint free kick into the goal in the 32nd minute, and Moussa Ndiaye couldn't get his foot to the deflection. Soerensen held firm again in first-half injury time, blocking Lamina Diatta's header off Fadiga's free kick, then beating El Hadji Diouf to save the fumbled rebound.
Cameroon 1, Saudi Arabia 0
SAITAMA, Japan -- Samuel Eto'o scored on a nifty individual move as Senegal defeated Saudi Arabia. The Saudis became the first team eliminated from advancing from the second round. Their second consecutive loss followed one of the most lopsided defeats in World Cup history, 8-0 against Germany in their opener. Cameroon will advance to the second round if it beats Germany on Tuesday. Eto'o slipped past two defenders in the 65th minute, calmly collecting a pass and using his right foot to push the ball beyond goalkeeper Mohammed al-Deayea.
France 0, Uruguay 0
BUSAN, South Korea -- The beleaguered defending champions are on the verge of tournament elimination. Forced to play a man down for 65 minutes after Thierry Henry was ejected, France came close to scoring several times. But without injured star Zinedine Zidane, it couldn't solve goalkeeper Fabian Carini, and now France must beat Denmark on Tuesday or else go home. It was the first scoreless tie in this World Cup.
