BASEBALL DRAFT Mooney grad Bushey selected by Rockies

The former Cardinals star will play with Notre Dame in NCAA Tournament.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The baseball career of Cardinal Mooney High graduate Andrew Bushey is just getting started.
A senior third baseman at Notre Dame, Bushey was selected in Tuesday's amateur draft by the Colorado Rockies. The Boardman native was taken in the 15th round.
"It feels great," Bushey said. "I'm relieved to know where I stand.
"I was nervous coming into today."
The Rockies first took interest in Bushey as a junior when he was catching for the Irish. He's been told they will use him behind the plate.
"They projected me as a catcher in the minor leagues. I really like to catch," Bushey said. "It gives me a better feel for the game, like a field general."
This season, he started 14 times as a catcher at Notre Dame and had 10 starts there as a junior. Last summer, Bushey started 12 of 14 games as a catcher in the Cape Cod League.
"I knew I was going to get drafted, but not when or where," Bushey said. "The Rockies were the only team to talk to me and show interest."
Scouting report
The scouting report on Bushey, according to mlb.com, describes him as having a "stocky, athletic frame." He has a "short, quick and accurate release with on-line carry." It goes on to say that Bushey has "sure hands, is agile and has fairly quick feet."
Bushey, 22, will put those talents on display when the Rockies assign him to one of their minor league affiliates. Before that, the 6-foot, 195-pound Bushey is preparing with the Irish (47-15) to play in the NCAA Super Regionals on Friday against Florida State (59-12) in Tallahassee, Fla.
Bushey is batting .333 with six home runs and 57 RBIs. He has 54 doubles to rank sixth on the all-time Notre Dame list and had 10 sacrifice bunts this year.
A left-handed hitter, Bushey hits fourth or fifth in the ND batting order.
He was one of four Notre Dame players drafted Tuesday. At Mooney he played short, second and third.
