YOUNGSTOWN -- A cracked windshield led to drug and gun charges against Michael T. Vaughn, 21, who gave police a Georgia address. Bond was set at $30,000 Monday in municipal court on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, aggravated trafficking in marijuana and illegal possession of a weapon. He also is charged with driving with a suspended license, driving an unsafe vehicle and no seat belt.
Police working a Weed & amp; Seed detail on the South Side stopped Vaughn on Market Street around 1:30 a.m. Monday for the cracked windshield. Vindicator files show that Vaughn was involved in a police standoff at his Parkcliffe Avenue home in 1997 while a juvenile.
Rape reported
CANFIELD -- Police are investigating a 19-year-old man's report that he was raped while at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. The special needs student arrived at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown just before midnight Friday and said he was raped around 1 p.m. Thursday at the center. There are no suspects yet, and the case remains under investigation. Dr. Roan Craig, schools superintendent, said the school also is conducting its own investigation. "We are cooperating fully with the police department," she said.
Alleged beating probed
CAMPBELL -- Police are investigating a 29-year-old Youngstown man after several people living near Gladstone Street and Courtland Avenue called 911 around 2:30 p.m. Sunday to report that the man was beating a woman in the street. The 26-year-old Boardman woman told police that she and her ex-husband were arguing in the car while she was driving. The ex-husband reportedly told her to pull over and let him out. When she stopped the car, he threw a full soda bottle at her, choked her and pulled her out of the car. Then, police reports state, the man drove off, leaving the woman and four children, who had been in the car, standing in the street.
Felony DUI charge
AUSTINTOWN -- An Austintown man was charged with felony DUI after police found him driving while intoxicated and on a suspended license. Harry Ferranti, 46, of North Roanoke Avenue, was arrested at 2:45 a.m. Saturday after officers noticed his black pickup go left of center in the 4400 block of Fitzgerald Avenue. Ferranti, who has had three DUI convictions within the past six years, had a blood-alcohol content level of .183, according to reports. He was taken into custody and transported to the Mahoning County jail.
Raccoon bites woman
AUSTINTOWN -- A Notre Dame Avenue woman was treated at Forum Health Northside Hospital after she was bitten by a raccoon. The 22-year-old woman called police after she tried to sweep a corner of her garage and was bitten by the animal around 6:30 p.m. Friday. Humane Agent Dave Nelson destroyed the animal and sent it to Columbus for testing after observing the raccoon acted like it was sick, according to reports. Test results were not available.
CIC to rebid contract
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp. voted Monday to rebid a janitorial contract for the George V. Voinovich Government Center. There was some confusion over instructions to several bidders. The CIC, the city's downtown agency which operates the building, decided to reject the proposals and rebid the contract to avoid liability problems.
MRDD public meeting
AUSTINTOWN -- The Mahoning County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is conducting a public plan meeting from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Leonard Kirtz School, 4801 Woodridge Drive. Attendees will break up into groups to discuss whether goals from the last plan meeting were met, and to develop new goals. Refreshments will be available.
